Beautiful, resonant, a great value!
I bought this on Prime Day and couldn't be happier with it. It is more beautiful than the pictures, a deeper caramel color, which I tried to capture in the photo. The wood grain is beautiful. The top appears to be solid mahogany, not plywood, but I'm not certain about that. The top is definitely solid mahogany. The head is very slightly asymmetrical, a small defect which you can see in some of the pictures, but it's not enough to be obvious. The tone is beautiful, rich and resonant. I haven't had any problems with buzzing. In terms of the accessories, the bag is well-padded, and the tuner makes the necessary re-tuning while the new strings are stretching a snap. The bridge is shaped for consistent intonation. After buying it, I noticed it was the top-rated concert-sized ukulele in the online The Wirecutter review of the best ukuleles for beginners. They also suggested this book for beginners: Essential Elements for Ukulele - Method Book 1: Comprehensive Ukulele Method Of course, it's not a $400 ukulele, but it's an amazing value for the price. The listing description may be a little misleading. Mine was made in China, not Japan. Perhaps the strings are made in Japan. Update: After playing it for about 5 months, I changed the strings to Aquila Super Nylgut. The sound became significantly louder, if not quite as sweet to my ear. 5 months later, I changed to Aquila Sugar strings. Now it is really bright and loud, with a lot of projection. For the first time, in a group of 20 strummers, I can always hear myself play. The Sugar strings settle in pretty fast, but be forewarned, they do squeak when you pluck them, rather like wound strings. This gets better with time. The string maker recommends using hand lotion on your hands to minimize the squeaking.

Affordable, quality ukulele packed with extras! Can't put it down!
This is the perfect pack for an aspiring ukulele player or a seasoned veteran! Solidly built, no complaints on quality. Plus it comes with some great extras...backpack gigbag, extra strings, a clip on tuner, and strap. The strap is especially helpful and looks great on the uke. The tuner is worth at least $15 itself, it has many modes from chromatic to guitar, bass to uke. Slim profile and you can fold it down to lay flat on the headstock when not in use. I really like the wood grain aesthetic of this ukulele, as well as the wooden tuning keys. It's a beautiful instrument. I would not hesitate to buy this again as a gift for someone I think might enjoy it. It's really a quality instrument, I've been playing it all night!

sorry for the bad pun. ) Honestly
As a 50-something woman, I've secretly longed to play the uke for years but felt time and ability to learn had passed me by. Not so, thanks to my new Donner ukele! After researching online, I opted for this low-priced model that came equipped with tuner and carrying case. Thank god for that as, knowing nothing, I would never have ordered a tuner. Without that little baby, my 'career' would have ended after the first frustrating 20 minutes. With the tuner and a week of practice, I'm strum patterning and chording to beat the band. (OK, sorry for the bad pun.) Honestly, after one week and some amazing websites, I'm confident and fairly competent on a range of songs, from the ever-expected Somewhere Over the Rainbow to Hallelujah to You're So Vain to Jolene to I'm Yours. True to my research info, I spent more time tuning the uke than trying to learn anything the first two days. Now, after a week, my uke stays in tune from day to day and I just have to check to make sure it's still ready to play. Now if only I could get my fingertips to callous as easily as the ukulele learned to stay in tune.......

Exceeded my expectations!

Better quality than you think.
This is a great Uke! I was a total rookie and this uke helped me learn how to play. I have improved so I thought it was time to upgrade to a quality instrument and spend some money. I passed on my Donner Tenor Uke to a friend and purchased my new high end uke. I was really surprised to find very little difference in playability and sound between the two. I realized the Donner was actually a really nice Uke after getting to know my new one. You get some great accessories with the Donner kit and it's such good quality for the price. The only thing I would suggest is to upgrade the strings AFTER the included strings wear out. They give you a second set of Donner strings which are great to keep tucked away in your case for an emergency. The strings that come with it aren't bad, but high end strings only cost around $8.

Smooth sound, great quality!
I noticed there weren't that many reviews here--and most of them were for grandmothers buying for children. I am a 25 year old beginner and I adore the sound and clarity of this uke. The build quality is terrific and I love the accessories as well! The tuner is great and so is the case!! And all for $52--sold!!!

Affordable and surprisingly well built and playable
I have been playing guitar for about 8 years, and I tent to always get very nice high end instruments since normally "you get what you pay for" applies for them. This is my first Ukelele and my children like to play around with instruments as well, so I decided to give this a shot since I didn’t want to pay a lot for something that the kids might be rough with. All I got to say is AMAZING! The look of it is simply super high end, tough it is not solid wood it looks just as if it was all mahogany. Beautifully built. SOUND: Very clear and nice resonance from the woods which plays very well with an acoustic guitar in terms of volume. It is little, but puts out a nice warm yet Ukulele like crisp highs STRINGS: I have kept the ones that are on and they do match the additional ones that they sent out (which is really cool), again not a Ukulele pro, however the strings are holding up very well and after the first week of playing and stay in tune quite well BODY: For this price, SUPERB! It is solid built and I can tell it will also take on some beating for a while. The neck is beautiful with a satin finish which makes nice to slide back and forth as you play TUNERS: These in combination with the strings that it comes with have worked super well to keep the instrument in tune for days at a time only minor adjustments every other day, and good to go. PLAYABILITY: Right out of the box this Ukulele feels very smooth around the fretboard, the frets are well polished and do not catch your fingers, the back of the neck allows for easy position change. BAG: Sturdy, extra pocket with zippers for any accessories you might want to carry (tuners, strings, pics, etc.), and it has two shoulder straps sot that you can wear it like a backpack. Nice! EXTRAS: in most cases the “bundles” are a combination of a few cheap items along with the main Item just to catch attention. Not the case here, the tuner (of the same brand as the guitar) works super well, and the plus is that it can be used for any string/vibration instrument. I haven’t used the extra set of strings, but if they are the same as the ones that came installed, I am in good shape. The strap as a really nice pattern and works very well, it can even be adjusted to fit a smaller child. If fits right in with our instrument collection. If you are looking for a starting instrument with an affordable price and that you can actually play. In my opinion that is it. p.s. I did not get this guitar for free from the manufactured (paid $55 for it), and I am not affiliated with Donner, just enjoy good music and nice instruments.

"That is mahogany!" - me to some plebe in the near future
I wanted to wait awhile to post this review, but I'm honestly too excited about it so I'm just gonna do it now. I am an ABSOLUTE beginner, I've never played a string instrument...or any instrument. With the exception of the recorder in the 4th grade along with the rest of America, the purpose of which will one day reveal itself, I'm sure. Anyway. I'm a musical-beginner, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but this ukulele seems great for someone at my skill level (- 5). It was easy to tune (I'm keeping the strings it came with for now, but I may switch them to the Aquila ones I purchased along with this ukulele once I find an easy-to-follow tutorial for replacing uke strings).. The sound is sweet and I've been plucking at it for about a week now. It does need to be tuned quite often, but I'm aware that this is true for all (most?) new ukes/strings and this will hopefully improve with time. The packaging was solid and all the advertised components were included. There was nothing wrong (either aesthetically or otherwise) with the ukulele itself and the finish on it is beautiful. I actually really loved the smell of it too, which is probably weird, but it just smells like fresh mahogany. A side benefit of this uke-choice is that a whole world of "That is mahogany!" jokes are now open to me. Speaking of side benefits, the extras that came with this uke are great - the bag is nice and padded, the tuner is easy enough for a noob like myself to use, and the strap has already proven itself to be useful. I'm glad I chose this ukulele and look forward to gaining even more hipster street cred with it in the future. :)

This ukelele ROCKS!

Lovely instrument
I am just starting to learn the ukulele and this one is the perfect size for me. I tried a soprano ukelel but it just didn't feel right for Mr. The sound on the Donner is clear and sharp. I can't wait to actually play a tune!
