I love this product. Love it. Since pets can be too much responsibility for a New Yorker, I decided to try a single fish as an adult. I was a kid when I used to have fish and times were simpler then, but now there's so many accessories and things to worry about. I wanted a simple eco-friendly solution, with a nice presentation, that gave me food to eat, and something pretty to look at. This water garden checked all the marks. — SET UP — Setting this up was incredibly easy. There is an included brochure that walks you step-by-step throughout the process with illustrations and easy to understand instructions: wash all the pieces, pour in tap water in tank, add dechlorinator, attach pump, add top white piece, add sponge, add grow rocks, add beneficial bacteria, add seeds, add gravel, add fish, and add additional decorations (purchased separately). Pretty easy. — GROWING — This comes with three growing trays, and you are provided with two different types of seeds: wheat grass, and radish micro-greens. They take anywhere from 7-10 days to be ready to eat, with the wheatgrass good for one extra regrowth. I was hesitant about throwing seeds on wet rocks and expecting something to happen, but three days in and they are all sprouting! (The radish are the faster, more obvious grower). I make shots with the wheatgrass, and use the radish on pizza. I also grow scallions (green onions) in here—which is easier to clean because the roots don't get tangled. — CHOOSING A BETTA — You are provided a $3 coupon at Petco for a Male Veiltail Betta. This is enough to make it free. I would suggest seeing how well you can take care of your first Betta and if you are successful, maybe consider a prettier but more expensive Betta (but don't put them together, of course). I didn't use the coupon and got a Double Veiltail for about 2.5x that price. — ADDITIONAL DECOR — I spoiled my Betta and got him live plants (to rest on), extra gravel, and two snails to clean any possible algae, along with food options. You are free to decorate how you wish. I do have to note that the gravel provided is minimal so you may want to get more. — THE ECOSYSTEM — If everything is done correctly, this system should basically be the circle of life in a 3-gallon tank: you feed your fish, the fish poops, the poops turn into food for the plants, the plant's roots clean the water, which your fish will enjoy living in to continue eating. I threw in live plants and snails, so we'll see if that helps to maintain overall cleanliness and liveliness. Also, this may not be obvious, but you *need* to be growing something on top. If you have dead/dying plants on top, it will throw things off and the water will turn gross. Try to have at least one or two trays growing something. — MAINTENANCE — As with any aquarium, you will have to take clean this at least once a month minimum. For me, I usually do a 25-35% water change every week. I take out water and pour distilled water back in. The rocks on top might grow fuzzy mold if you don't have good airflow in your home, so that will require taking the containers out to clean, along with the rocks. The tube will also have to be cleaned out regularly so that water can flow up. This is all part of the package of owning an aquarium. It will require upkeep. — THINGS TO NOTE — Don't put this in direct sunlight because your fish will hate you, and algae will grow faster. Also, the pump can be noisy; adjust the cord so it isn't vibrating too loudly. There should only be the sounds of humming and drops of water from the tray, which creates a soft white noise in whatever room you put this in. — SUMMARY — I happened to get this during a sale, which made it worth it to me. This is a wonderful idea well-executed (this is version 2.0 of the product, btw). You get to take care of a low-maintenance fish, grow food you can eat on a weekly basis, and beautify your home. Recommended.

This is a very simple aquaponic fish tank. It does take some time to set up, but having the kids involved makes it fun. We did buy extra gravel for the bottom of the tank and plants and decor for the tank since it looked a little bare. The seeds that it came with grew pretty quickly. We started seeing little plants after a day or so. Overall it’s a great project with my kids. Our 1 little betta fish seems to be happy also.

You need more hydroponic rock and rock for the tank itself. I haven't had to change the water for almost 2 months which is amazing. I have cilantro basil and parsley growing but wasn't enough rock to grow a root system to yield more herbs so when I redo the filtration system I'm going to add way more rock and possibly make some modifications to the filter system but I like it. It's clean, there's no smell and the fish are lively and happy.

I have had this tank for over a year and I still love it. Super low maintenance. Still do some research for your fish; as you would for any pet. I haven’t had the issues that others have mentioned here. I have a had a goldfish in the tank before and now a betta; both very happy in the tank. I have not had any issues with algae or plants not growing etc. Everything worked smooth. I do recommend getting a replacement pump every now and then. Constant use seems to wear them out. I’m on my second pump-the other started sounding really loud.

My fish love this. I purchased more bacteria when I ran out on amazon to go with. Icould go 6 weeks between cleanings. My water never got murky at 6 weeks, I could just see fuzzy stuff on the poops at the bottom of the tank. I did do a full tank cleaning if with 100% water change and a thorough washing and rinsing of the rocks at the bottom to get out all gunk. I would add water ever 2 weeks or so. Pros: nice design. Wheatgrass grows very well in this. Other things not so much. Cons: the pumice-like grow rocks on top are hard to clean. To get out decomposing seeds that don't sprout I have to soak and pick the clean rocks out by hand ever 6 weeks or else mold will grow a lot. A heater is best if using for a betta and the spacing is okay but not great when my heater and water pump are both in. My betta did not like the way the water from the pump made a waterfall so the surface was always moving. I was able to take some plastic drape it under the sponge to the water surface which cut the surface disruption a lot.

I love these! In the first photo, you can see my new one with basil growing on top. The second photo is my old unit with the original design. I like the new design much better because they fixed the problem of the cords interfering with removal and cleaning of the tray. The pump had gone out in my older unit, so now I'm using it without a pump. I omitted the tray and let the baskets hang right into the water. Loki loves swimming up there around the baskets. I'm trying out basil in the old unit as well. The third photo shows the grow lights I'm using for the basil. It's one unit with 3 parts you can position as you need. The left light is down where it is of benefit to the water plants. All in all, the water garden is fun and helps me easily keep my basil happy through the winter. This is what I use to hold the basil in place in the baskets, then I surround it with the grow stones. Oh, and I washed all the dirt from the roots before putting the plants in the baskets. https://www.amazon.com/GrowGrip-Plant-Holder-25-2/dp/B00N15FO3E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1550761345&sr=8-1&keywords=grow+grip These are the grow lights I bought. I like that I can set them to go on and off automatically every 12 hours. https://www.amazon.com/Amconsure-Spectrum-Dimmable-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07JLJFWNY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1550761283&sr=8-3&keywords=winjoy+grow+light

Absolutely LOVE the latest version of the Water Garden!! I own both the original version and the newest, and WOW, the newer version of the lid makes it so much easier to clean. With the older lid, everything had to be fed through the lid itself so the tubing, filter, and heater (heater not included) wires would all come up together and it could get a little messy, but now, there is a notch at the edge of the lid that allows everything to rest undisturbed when removing the lid -YES!!!!. It's great, and a super cool way to grow fresh sprouts!!

We've been wanting to get a betta fish as a first pet for our 11-month-old baby boy at home -- when we saw that Back to the Roots has a really cool water garden betta fish tank, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to purchase it. The fish tank was really easy to set up and in the instructions booklet it came with a $3 off male betta fish at Petco, so on the same day, we took our baby boy to Petco and we all picked out a fish there together. When we got home, we followed the instructions and set up our tank. It was really easy to follow and so easy to set up! The fish has been loving the fish tank and we've already see some sprouts coming through just after a few days, we are really excited to see what comes next!

Love this. We painted the back of tank with black paint and added a submersible light. I recommend soaking the seeds for a few days till they sprout before putting on rocks. We added;aquatic plants, guppies, African dwarf frog , mystery snail, nerite snails and blue velvet shrimp. It's a very happy ecosystem.

This combination fish tank and herb garden is a delight for our whole family. My child loves the beta fish and watching the herbs grow, and I love not having to clean the tank! Having the fresh herbs growing right in our kitchen is really nice, too. We're coming up with recipes that make use of the herbs, and enjoying every moment and bite.
