A new seal is all you need.
I think my MIL problem has been solved. I was going to replace the whole gas cap when browsing on Amazon that the plastic cap isn't broken. It may just be the seal. So I ordered this and took the old seal off and it was brittle as a stick. You can instantly tell a fresh seal as it was rubbery and bendable and squeezable. No more gassy smell, creates a tight seal, and no more MIL light. Awesome.

Gasket is thicker and more pliable than factory rubber gasket.
This gasket actually works for the VW/Audi screw in type gas caps. Instead of paying $40-$90 for another genuine VW gas cap just replace the old gasket with this high quality gasket and forget about it. I did this for my nephew's 2007 VW Jetta which had the infamous P0457 CEL lighting up his dash. When we scanned it, right away, the explanation was slow EVAP leak in emissions control system. All codes point to checking the gas cap first and sure enough the round edge of the fuel cap was dry as a bone, and the gasket was also dry and cracked. A tell tale sign that this was the cause, even though, we were hand tightening the heck out of the gas cap. The code would come back in a few hours after resetting it so this was the only solution to the problem without forking over more money for a new gas cap that would eventually suffer the same fate in a few years. This is more so in the colder climates where rubber and plastic will eventually give out after several subzero winter seasons. I hope this information helps another person in making a proper decision.

Check engine light on----try this
When the check engine light reader indicated a large vapor leak-----there are several expensive possibilities----The gas cap is a strong possibility-----In my case I bought a new sealing ring---installed it on the existing gas cap---reset the check engine light-----and it's never come back on, indicating that the Oring fixed my problem

Exact fit
At first I thought I was getting the whole assembly but read it again and I realized it was just the rubber... nonetheless the rubber was a perfect quality replacement

works
If your check engine light is from the gas cap ? then you need to replace the "O" ring or seal.( generic after market will not work ) Once you do that your check engine light will still be on. If you take off both battery cables and jumper them together your check engine light should go off ! If Not you got bigger problems .

Why pay for an OEM gas cap when you can fix it quickly and easily?
My Audi TT was throwing codes. Vacuum leak. Gas cap. After 14 years, the rubber had just given up. A new OEM gas cap was over $45 dollars. Instead, I found this gasket, looks exactly like the old knackered one, but this one is new. Popped it on, cleaned it all up with Armor All. Start car - no codes. Perfect fix for 10 times less than a new cap. I'll call that a win.

I was very pleased with this replacement gasket
I was very pleased with this replacement gasket. It was an exact match to the original that had developed cracks due to age. I looked around the local auto stores but they only carry an after market total replacement — a gasket and cap. I’m glad I didn’t have to purchase that OEM cap just to get the gasket. Thanks.

tI bought a Rialta that someone broke the gas cap off. I have tried to use a "Slant" equivalent but it doesn't quite work right and the check engine light comes on with the gas cap code. The Slant would not "click" into place as it should. The first time I put this cap on is seated nice and tight and "clicked." Headed out for a few days and will see it it continues to sear correctly.
