After several phone calls with ISP (rhymes with BlomBlast) and getting the usual run around: "It's used and you can't use a used modem", "It seems to be registered with another account", " we don't have this model in the system", I figured out a way to make things less painful: USE THE CHAT SYSTEM. It allows you to copy and paste serial numbers, etc. and it allows your case to be instantly escalated to someone who *actually knows* what they are doing and can help. Using chat, they process was about 15 min (after 2 hours on the various phone calls!) and everything worked out and was sorted promptly. The actual Modem works very well! Fast and simple to manage. Phone lines in the back to use with VoiP (the reason I had to change modems). The model IS supported my SlomSlast. It IS in their system. It CAN be used.

After just spending 2+ hours with an Xfinity installer, checking the internet, and then doing a manual install, I can confirm this modem works 100% for both internet and voice with Xfinity. The speed is amazing and the voice is crystal clear. I highly recommend a firewall/wireless router with this, as it is just a gateway, but it replaces the Comcast gateway thus saving you $10 a month and eventually paying for itself. Here's how to make it work (along with a word of caution). If possible, install the modem yourself! The installers know very little about 3rd-party modems and will tell you this device is obsolete/unsupported/impossible to activate/etc. We had to have an installer come because we had no cable outlet. However, our installer went so far as to cancel our phone service plan when he couldn't get the Arris to work, since we told him not to install the Comcast modem--we had to make him re-enable the plan so we could self-install our router! The truth is this modem is 100% supported as stated on the Xfinity web page. All you do is plug it in and call to activate it. However--and here is the important part that people are missing--there are TWO activations. One is for the internet, and the other is for the phone. After activating the internet, you have to ask to be transferred to phone provisioning so they can activate the phone. Our installer spent an hour on the phone re-sending the internet activation signal and wondering why the phone wouldn't work. After he left, I called Xfinity with my cell phone and a phone provisioning agent had the modem working in minutes. I'm very happy with the speed of the modem vs. the Xfinity modem, and extremely pleased to be free of Xfinity's monthly modem rental fee. For the average customer (100mb or less) this is the modem to get.

First this is so far (about a week into it now) good device. I'm purely using it for the phone feature. However due to the rating system 5 means its okay. There aren't a lot of features, but it is a solid connection. It's doing a good job so far. It has all the standard features, but nothing really pops out. I'm looking for a blackout feature (where the LEDs are off once your sure it works). I have this connected to a second coax line (xFinity's input method) that converts to RJ45 (I'm not using this for internet, I have a separate ARRIS for that). This allows me to move this box near a phone jack. This is so after I disconnect the outside phone link I can connect the ARRIS to a phone jack thus making all the other lines in the house live. Other thoughts - I bought the largest batter that fits the base (18-24 hour battery). I live in the Houston area. So a significant power battery is needed in case of storms or hurricanes. I've tested it for 18 hours (just unplugged it) and it worked well. Still looking for a way turn off the LEDs (that will extend the life quite a bit).

I have had Comcast for 8-9 years, and have been paying for modem rentals all that time. It started out at $5/mo., then $7, now $10. Up until this point I had 2 separate modems, 1 for internet and one for phone (EMTA). I never wanted one of their wireless gateway all-in-ones because I run my own home network, router and WAP. I wanted to replace my Comcast devices for quite a while, and could have done so for the internet side of things, but there were no phone capable units sold for retail, and thus I would have still incurred the rental fee. I looked at some versions found online (TM722, TM822) but they were generic package versions, and although many reviewers said they were able to get them working with Comcast, others told horror stories about trying to activate "non-authorized" (according to Comcast versions. Recently I found this retail version of the TM822, stating on the box "optimized for Xfinity" which is of course Comcast. It is an internet and EMTA modem ONLY, not a router or wireless access point, which is exactly what I wanted. After receiving it and hooking it up it took about 45 minutes on the phone with Comcast to get it activated, and then a bit longer for the phone service to come back. The next day for some reason it stopped working, but after another call to Comcast it has been stable, with no problems. My internet speeds have not changed (I was not expecting them to since I already had a DOCSIS 3.0 MODEM). I've had it for about 2 months now, the $10 rental charge is off my bill and it will pay for itself in 15 months. Very pleased so far.

I am not a tech savvy person but this works like magic. Traded it in to stop paying Comcast monthly modem fee. This works if you have Comcast triple play...I took it out the box skimmed through the directions, unplugged my router and old modem and connected the new modem. Plug everything back in, the lights blinked and blinked and blinked a little bit more. Then I did the online activation with Comcast and its up and running. Didnt have to call Comcast customer service..always a plus.

This is exactly what I needed to install Xfinity phone and internet service only in the SF Bay Area. This was recommended by a friend who has the exact one for the same service and Arris Surfboard brand was also recommended by a few geek friends. I pre-wired everything and there is a direct connection from the Arris to the Apple Airport for WiFi and three hardwired computers. I purchased this as an Amazon Warehouse deal and it came perfectly although it was a repack job. The price was about $50 less than full new retail. I did buy the backup battery but read a lot of reviews on Amazon. I decided to buy it directly from the Arris company to get a known fresh battery. I know this isn't a review on the battery but wanted to put out the information. PROS: The modem is perfect for the internet and landline. Solid construction and sturdy. CONS: Nothing really. It was a repack and some documentation was missing but everything else is there. This was a good purchase and I'd highly recommend the Arris Surfboard brand.

Same situation as Lenski99. I run my own Motorola Surfboard Modem and NetGear Wireless Router for internet. I like to control that! - no Xfinity Gateway for me... Been renting an obsolete (but still works) TM602G (just for Digital Voice) for way too long while waiting for a new approved retail telephony modem to purchase that Comcast/Xfinity recommends. Plugged in the TM822R, called the activation # and the digital voice phone was up and running in about 15 minutes. The first person takes the account and modem info and activates the new modem on your account (AND deletes the old VOIP modem off the account - have 30 days to turn it in to Comcast store). You are then transferred to a VOIP digital voice tech who provisions the voice half of the modem. The customer rep called back on the voice line to make sure can receive calls also. Easy. No more $10/month rental....

Got tired of paying the Evil Empire of Comcast/Xfinity an extra $12 a month for their crappy modem, just because I have their Triple Play package and need a compatible telephony modem. What's even more funny is once I hooked this up, my wireless speeds suddenly were faster and more consistent and my call quality was much better. They keep calling me with cryptic messages about how my equipment is "outdated and may not give you the full experience", but it seems to work just fine for me. And the fact that this paid for itself in just a little over a year, and works better than the world class junk they gave me, makes me very happy.

Comcast must have improved their systems. Last 3rd party modem was difficult to get activated involving multiple calls to their tech support. Not this time. Unplugged the old unit, plugged in this unit, waited for power up, then went to the Comcast activation website. Entered my account info, unit cycled power, and worked flawlessly afterwards. Literally took 5 minutes. Unit is working well with solid performance and good bandwidth. And of course no rental fees. edit: update after a year of use. Not a single phone or Internet service interruption. I did add the optional battery backup. Service plan says "up to 150MBPS" and I'm consistently seeing 170-190MBPS. Has already paid for itself in offset rental fees, and works far better than the rental unit.

We planned to switch back to Comcast/XFINITY after having CenturyLink for a year. Last time we had Comcast we had an awful modem/router/WiFi combo that I desperately wanted to avoid this time around. Not only did I hate that hardware but I had to pay $10/mo. for it! The TM822R looked like it would work for us so I ordered it early and had it on hand when the technician arrived to do the install. I also let them know when I signed up for the service that I had my own router. Comcast did try to say that having my own router might be a problem. They indicated that they won't support it if I have issues but I was determined not to have their hardware or that $10 monthly charge. I told them I have the TM822R and they said it is supported by their system and would work for Internet and phone. The install went very smoothly. The technician was able to activate the modem and transfer our landline in less than 30 minutes. The XFINITY Connect App is working fine too. With it setup our cells ring whenever our home phone rings. I now have a solid internet connection and the voice clarity is also great but it has only been a few days since the install. I'll post an update if anything changes. I ordered the 8 Hour Arris Touchstone Modem Backup Battery for Tm802 Tm822 (colors vary). It works fine for this modem.
