Not perfect, but an amazing value for the price!
I suppose that one benefit of entering my seventh decade is the ability to compare the value/priceof of new products with what has come before. From that standpoint alone, the value of this Onkyo receiver is exceptional. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it is easy to set up and really does sound great. Here are a few specifics. I like the ability to easily control content and volume of the second zone. You can use the zone 2 speaker terminals or your own amp. You can play separate content or let it automatically play the same content as the main zone. That is a very convenient feature. I use the iOS app and it works well for me. You can buy a receiver with a more powerful amp, but for most of us the unit has lots of juice. The menu control isn’t perfect, you can get “lost in the weeds” on occasion. I really like to use a sleep timer but Onkyo makes this very difficult. Some manufacturers have a sleep timer on the remote or the iOS app, but as far as I can tell, the only way to access the timer is through the main setup menu, and the timer is buried in the “Hardware” sub-menu. That means the TV has to be on to use it. Bad design in this case. On the plus side, there is a quick menu that easily lets you control bass treble and speaker level. (Why didn’t they at least put the sleep timer there?). By the way, I really suggest downloading the basic and advanced manuals before you buy the unit. It will tell you everything you need to know. So what is my bottom line? The Onkyo is an amazing value. It has almost every feature you could want, from AirPlay to easy zone 2 controls. Most important to me is that, at least in my house, it sounds great. You could easily spent three times the price and not do better!

Onkyo and Amazon delivered well
I am very happy with this receiver. I admit I was intimidated with the new technology. I saw where others said this unit was not functioning properly until the firmware update. Mine is perfect. I have it set up with the Klipsch RP-450C center, and wow. I can hear so much detail. I wanted the Klipsch towers, RP-280F's, but I made a fatal mistake pulling this together. I fell into the Best Buy trap, and quickly purchased the Klipsch R-820's listed at $224 each. Best Buy, first of all, made it seem these were available for pick up, but then told my wife who went on Black Friday, and stood in line, no, these are a transfer. The Ad didn't state that. Then, they said they would be available next Friday. I waited. Then, I got a message by email, they would possibly be available in 30 more days, by December, 30. I flipped out. I went and cancelled, but of course, your money is now pending, all $487.10 for the pair, lol. I went back to Amazon, feeling shaken. They pulled this from defeat to amazing, when I happened to notice the Premier Acoustics PA-8.12's. WOW! So, I got them, already had a Klipsch R-10 sub. This set up is oh my goodness good. There was some damge to one of the towers, and I'm pretty certain this was UPS. The seller took care of this immedeiately! Extremely pleased with Amazon and the end result. My wife and I had recently watched a Christmas music special by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 2015, while using just the Yamaha sound bar and Klipsch 10" sub, then we watched the 2017 Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas program with every changed out as related here. WOW! Big difference!

Excellant vaule for basic a/v needs.
I was looking for a replacement for a 10yr old Denon receiver w old school rca connections. Great receiver, just outdated, not enough hdmi ports, or network connections, etc. I'm not an audiosnob, so i wanted to connect to my home theater system, sub and add my devices/tv and internet. i had this set up in an hour or so, and was rocking out and enjoying my favorite action movies too. Easy to set up, configure the built in audio testing device, plug and play. Lots of extras, connections, nice remote too.. All in all a great product for the price from a trusted name..

not the best for acustics
Upgrading from an older Onkyo with component inputs. This unit is paired with a Samsung UHD TV, Samsung 4k Player and some really old Bose speakers and a Yamaha sub. Set up (onscreen) was a breeze in my odd shaped room and the unit performs flawlessly. Unfortunately the room is all hardwood and drywall, not the best for acustics, but the set up really brings out the best sound for streaming music (via the built in Spotify app), streaming 4k and UHD 4K discs. The meager 55" TV is the only thing that keeps me going to the theater as the sound in my livingroom is as awe inspiring as the boom at the local theater.

Great BANG! for the Buck
Easy to tune and balance speakers output during setup process w/ included microphone. Excellent play-through HDMI. Bluetooth play through Chromecast pays ONLY audio, I had hoped for video play through on Chromecast. Remote is simple and functional. I was unable to effectively program my DirecTV remote to operate the Onkyo. Looking forward to upgrading my speaker system next!

I liked this AVR so much I bought a second one for our living room. What steered me in this direction on the first unit which is used in my "man cave" is the built-in turntable amplifier. It does everything well and has just about every feature built in. Wifi and Bluetooth perform great, has plenty of inputs and processes all the popular codecs and surrounded formats. The tonal quality is very neutral so it presents an accurate soundstage. A whole lot of bang for the price!

Excellent receiver worth the money
This replaced my older 636. The HDMI ports went out on it and I had been keeping it alive with just a fiber audio cord but wasn't happy there was a delay so finally got around to upgrading. This was a breeze to setup with the onscreen menus and once i fix/replace my sub that seems to have blown at some point without me realizing it (watch a lot of things with the sub off later at night when I usually get a chance to watch on this system) it will perform much better. My wife will hate it. Played Hellblade on it and the constant voices coming from the surrounds were great. Currently running 4 JBL control 1 speakers and a Bic Venutri center. Again got to fix the sub and eventually would like to get to towers for the front and make two of the control ones atmos speakers. Future goals.

Great receiver at reasonable price
Weird receiver..... has tons of features....some behavior I find annoying. For example, I have 4K 8000 series 65" Samsung and 5.1 Polk set-up. Picture and sound are great. However, it switches by itself to 4K BD for no reason (bd player turns on automatically). I use HDMI for all inputs/outputs. Including ARC. Very annoying. Maybe need to switch to a different HDMI cable brand for my TiVo cable box?. The problem was with the CEC of BD player. The issue has been resolved.

I bought this to replace a 2 year old Sony. (I was tired of fighting with the Sony to properly display pictur and sound on the screen using HMDI I puts). The Onkyo works perfectly as intended out of the box!!!!! Thanks Onkyo

Onkyo and Atmos for the win!
So this was my first atmos enabled receiver so I have nothing to compare that feature too. I have been using it since April 2018 and have pieced together a 5.1.2 setup over the past year, I had speakers from an older onkyo 5.1 kit. I moved the front bookshelves to the back and have them as surrounds, a Polk audio CS10 Center (it’s amazing), two Polk audio Monitor 60’s, two Micca M-8C 8 inch in ceiling/in wall speakers, and a Polk Audio PSW505 subwoofer (soon to be two). The atmos is an amazing experience when watching compatible content. I have a lg OLED C7 65 inch tv and it immediately connected with ARC which I love, I keep the onkyo remote in a drawer with the others. PS4 Pro had to be adjusted for bitstream out on the audio so the receiver could decode certain games for Dolby. Seriously though the clarity when I upgraded my speakers and how all I had to do was plug in the little mic it comes with to automatically adjust the speakers, I’ve done it about 5 or 6 times now and each time it makes minor adjustments since I’ve moved stuff around a lot. The receiver pushes plenty of power when it’s given proper equipment and If you’re a budget audio enthusiast I highly recommend this receiver and Polk audio speakers. The Dolby atmos demo on my tv drops everyone’s jaws when they come into my house now.
