I'm preparing to purchase and renovate a house, so I need to measure room dimensions, width of trim, and everything in between. I chose this item because it had exactly the features that I wanted and none that I didn't. KISS principle and all that. * Laser shows measurements in feet and inches (no option for just inches, decimals, or metric) in a nice large display (plus to nearest 1/16 inch but very small). * Laser measures from back of unit only. * Laser measurement display shows the most recent measurement until it turns off automatically after about 15 seconds (or hold the button down for 3 seconds). * Tape stays out until you press the retract button. Unit weight is 11.1 ounces. Setup was easy with the included batteries and tiny screwdriver. Operation is intuitive, since the button only does 4 things: on, set up the laser, show measurement, and off. The instruction booklet is very small and easy to overlook, since operation is just two steps ("Press once to find target. Press again for measurement."). About 20 test measurements were accurate when compared to previous measurements done with a regular tape measure. There is one thing I would change: The laser measurement display is right-side up when the unit is held in the right hand; if it was reversed, then I could be recording measurements with my right hand while doing the button-pressing with my left. However, the display being on top is more convenient than the side display that I saw on other units.

When I first saw this, it thought, “Awesome idea, but will it really work?”. I have to say, it is AWESOME and does exactly what it is supposed to do. A 16 foot tape is not always enough, but typically gets the job done. And even when using a longer tape, like 25” or longer, your accuracy is not great, particularly when you are measuring alone. The 50’ laser built into this tape measure works GREAT!. It is easy to change from using the tape, to the laser with one hand, particularly because the tape automatically stands out in a locked position, unlike most others where you have to lock with another hand. When you retract the tape, you can easily press the laser for a further distance and the screen (although a little small), points right at you when you put it against the wall. A lot of stuff like this feels like junk or a toy, but this feels like a professional tool in your hand and works like one too. I actually took a chance (knowing I could return it) and bought 3 (one for my house, one for my dad and one for my brother for Father’s Day). The one thing I would change is the packaging. Seems like there might be gold in this package, based on what you need to do to get the batteries out (which are energizer, not cheap china batteries), but I guess that is not the end of the world. Great job on this one General Tools! Being a family of contractors and DIY people, this is a tool that is long overdue and one that everyone tool and/or even a gadget person needs to have. It will eliminate climbing ladders in many cases and needing another set of hands for estimating and doing simple layout.

First non-tape measuring device I've used that's as accurate as a metal tape. Very satisfied.

I consider this to be an excellent price for an excellent product. I like the graduations on the traditional tape part, which is actually labeled in 1/8 increments; to me nice touch. The laser measure seems to be very accurate and consistent. I checked it for short easy to validate distances. The reason I bought it, was I wanted to measure to the gable of my roof line to the ground to decide what length of ladder to purchase.

>>> This is an excellent quality - ruggedly well constructed - heavy duty tape measure. >>> It WORKS perfectly - although one may not know that, unless you get the instructions for it. >>> It doesn't come with any - product overview - operating instructions - nor features and specifications. But GENERAL Tools web address is on the package - got there ph# and they emailed the pdf file. >>> When one receives the FOUR pages of complete information - you can better understand how it works and appreciate it's quality. >>> This is indeed one hand operation - compact - durable - & affordable. >>> TAPE MEASURE - Sturdy blade, surface looks & feels textured. 16 ft L - 3/4" W. Includes 1/32" hash marks. Blade, end tab is particularly sturdy for hooking. Approx 1/2" long - reinforced with three rivets. > Excellent blade retraction by pressing the gray button. (Seems to work best when pressed in the center) Use - conventional ruler for under 10 inches. >>> PRESS RED LASER BUTTON - An invisible infrared beam on a 'target' calculates - and is reflected back to the tool, the distance up to 50 ft. is shown in 1/4" high digital readout, which includes - feet - inches - and fraction of inch > 1/8" high. No back light. >>> This is said to be accurate with-in 1/16" to 1/4", which is very good when you consider the sag of a conventional tape at 50 ft. >>> THE LASER MEASUREMENT includes the 3 1/4" long tape housing. So - the back of the tape measure needs to be against the surface you measure from. If one doesn't realize this is the reference point, ya may think the measure is 3" off - BUT it isn't. > The tool is ready to use upon receipt. There's no calibration needed / nor available. >>> Catchy point --- It takes two times pressing the RED BUTTON to get a reading. First time turns it on - Second time reads. > If you wait longer then 15 second before the second pressing - it won't read. You'll know this by the 'laser enabled icon'. When flashing ready for the second press. Not flashing - need to press twice, back to back to clear and start over. >>> Laser goes auto off in 15 second, OR hold down red button for three seconds. Display auto off in 60 seconds. >>> Powered by 2 AAA batteries - included. Alkaline only. Suggested for approx 3,000 measurements. Has battery charge indicator. And screwdriver to open battery compartment. >>> The ruler is great for Pro's or DIYers - but being it's heavy duty - it's fairly good size in hand. (3" sq. by nearly 2" wide including belt clip - which is removable with one Phillips screw) Weights 11.1 oz. WARNING = >>> Keep ruler away from pacemakers. The inside magnet generates a field that can impair their function. Keep away from magnetic data storage media, whose contents can be erased by the magnetic field. One year warrant.

Bought this as a father's day gift for my husband. he looked at me like "What?" But since then he has used it for a multiple of things that he doesn't have to pull the tape out for. Great Gift!!!! Great Idea!!!

The product arrived in good condition and on time. It is of good quality and very helpful in my building projects. I love the way you can use it one handed and when you retract it, it doesn't slap around. It retracts nice and smoothly.

This is just what I was looking for! The measuring tape locks in place and rolls up with a push of a button. The laser pointer is accurate and this is the perfect tool when measuring alone. Highly recommend!

This tape measure is wonderful! Spot on measurements too. Makes measuring very long things easy and no more having to pull out the tape and drag it across the wall or yard trying to measure the fence, etc.

When estimating for my work I used to carry around a tape measure and a laser measure. I have been waiting for a combo like this and before righting this review, I used this product for one year and I just it 5 days a week. It has stood up to the abuse very well. The tape could be stronger and longer. The laser works up to 50' and seems to be enough for my daily use. Give this a try.
