Always used CB for offroading, but decided to dive into the world of VHF/UHF. Definitely tune with Chirp software as it couldn’t be easier. Sound quality is good, battery life is decent and coverage in the mountains is as expected

I love the extra power. Coupling this with another antennae gave me crystal clear reception at 4 miles with alot of obstacles.

This is a great radio for the price. But beware that this radio is illegal to use without a FCC Technician License and the FCC will seek you out. It also covers frequencies that are illegal to all except Aviators. Listening to airband is ok but never transmit on airband as it could land you in jail. My point in saying all this is make sure you do not let your kids play with this radio.

Great handheld VHF/UHF. With a longer antenna, you can easily find a repeater in most metropolitan areas. Easy to program with a computer and CHIRP, but not so easy to program on the radio itself. Can't beat it for the price.

This radio works well for HAM radio frequencies. Also accessible by this radio are Marine and MURS radio channel/frequencies. Radio provides inexpensive cost as a starter radio and learning the basics.

This is a powerful little radio with a lot of features. It's well built and feels solid. With the extra power, it has a good range and the battery lasts a long time. The built in FM broadcast band feature comes in handy for listening to news or music. Using the Chirp software and a USB cable, I was able to easily program all the frequencies I use such as the local repeaters, NOAA weather, Marine VHF, GMRS/FRS, police and fire....etc. This is a wonderful radio.

While I have given this radio and it's seller a full five star rating, I have not done actual programming and or really used it, out in the field yet to confirm, all is well. I'm anxious to get it out and use it. I really like its small and compact package. The sound, as tested so far, is great. This is the second Baofeng I've purchased. The first one, from another seller, had to be returned due to the fact that it had a charging issue and the seller did not want to honor their commitment to customer satisfaction. So, I went with this one. We'll see how things go. I'm very happy so far and would recommend (and have already) this dealer/seller to others. SR

I've had another BaoFeng product and returned it after realizing that they sometimes do modifications that make it fail to work with CHIRP, even though the model is listed as supported. I suppose that's going to sometimes be a problem with this manufacturer, given the reality that CHIRP is a volunteer effort, and they can't be on top of every change. CHIRP depends on manufacturers to help develop support, and that's just not likely with this outfit. But the way they're selling, they may become far more active in such things. However, programming this one was a breeze, once I actually read the notice that the cable connector must be inserted FIRMLY to the double click. I read down the current memory, deleted the entries, imported from my generic file, and uploaded. The most gratifying thing was that I can sit in my office and chunk a 2-meter repeater 30 miles away. Granted, the repeated is way up on a broadcast tower, but this radio is just so small, and it does that. I don't have the connectors to check power out, but it can't be much less than rated. It also receives three different WX stations from this same spot. If I could have one wish granted, it would be to be able to customize the display so I could put a channel name on the second line where the tone is. But you can't have everything at this price. Really cheap way to get on UHF. Five stars for value for money. I have not had it long enough to rate battery life or water resistance, but it sounds good.

Great for the bug-out bag or even as a part of your HAM Shack, this little HT has more power than most HT's out there. It can hit our local 2m repeater over 16 miles from my home. Reception is good, speaker quality is OK, features when combined with CHIRP for programming is excellent. Slight learning curve to manually program using the keypad, but worth the effort in case the SHTF. Overall 4.5 out of 5 for this Mirkit edition of the 5R.

I upgraded my existing Baofeng 5w handhelds with two 8w handhelds. I can now hit local repeaters with the extra power. I am a real Baofeng fan and can't wait for their next iteration which should be in the 12-15w range which I will again buy to upgrade. You can't go wrong with this radio. I like the fact that I can program the upper band display with the name and the lower band display with the frequency - way cool!! If you have the programming cable (a must have) and the free application CHiRP then you are in business to plug in over 120 freq in less than a minute. 73s
