Even though the age recommendation is 8+, I am building volcanos with a bright 4-year-old, and he loves it. Yes, he looked a little let down when he pointed to a picture of red-hot flowing lava and said, "Let's make it look like THIS!"—only to be told by me that our volcano would be much more modest, and pale. But he was soon distracted by the fun of rolling out the clay and fashioning the volcano. To help manage his expectations before I even showed him the box, I explained that this was not a quickie project. That it would go in steps -- forming the volcano, painting it, and finally creating the eruption. I think it's a good idea to help children delay gratification, to learn the importance of sometimes tedious steps on the way to a large reward. Yes, you could probably assemble this kit on your own. But not many people are motivated to do that. They might have modeling clay sitting around but maybe it doesn't dry in the same way. There might be paints but perhaps they might not adhere to the clay. And so forth. I enjoyed being able to present him with an all-in-one gift—fun pictures and facts about dinosaurs and volcanoes, two bags of clay, the pipette and spatula, rolling pin sized for small hands and arms, and two cutely illustrated trays for holding the items. We're still at the drying-the-clay stage. It takes 48 hours. We'll paint next. I like that it has more than one activity with the volcano, different types of eruptions. He's also very excited about the dinosaur.

My kids area really interested in dinosaurs so this was good for them. I liked teaching them about fossils. We really like science kits. I would much prefer them doing something than watching something. Science is such an important subject, and I really like that they can learn about it. It is nice because they can spend the time doing it. They are excited when they make something themselves. They love to make new discoveries. This is a great activity for a rainy day or a day when your child is sick or when you are just stuck at home. It is a good way to keep a child busy. I thought it was age appropriate. It wasn’t too hard. The children really liked how it turned out. I feel like this is good for child development. It kept my children's interest. It would also make a nice gift. I would recommend it.

Grandboy loves science so this product was great.

Big hit; kids are fascinated by volcanoes and geysers. The vinegar-and-baking soda model is relatively safe to play with (we did a lot of that kind of "chemistry" as kids, too.) The fact book gives some information to stimulate further reading and discussion. There are fifteen different experiments, so one or more will be useful for "I have to do a science project, Dad & Mom" situations, which was the immediate reaction of one of the parents. Oh, goody. That solves one thing on the to-do list for this school year. The clay volcano is a classic, but I liked the "how fossils are made" experiment with the dinosaur model. Poor little dinosaur!

Great STEM kit for the budding paleontologist, geologist, or volcanologist in the family. Features 15 experiments , two dinosaurs, one volcano and a 36 page career and lab guide.Recommended for ages 8+ Highly Recommended!

This kit is a lot of fun! I got it for my six year old for Christmas! His favorite part was excavating the dinosaurs!

I bought this for my kids (ages 5, 8, and 11) to play together and they have really enjoyed it. So far we have only done the experiment making the clay volcano with the baking soda and vinegar. It is a few days process because you make the clay volcano one day, paint it the next, and do the experiment the following. That all helped increase the anticipation and excitement around it. What I also enjoyed was that the volcano is reusable so they can do it again and again! It was neat that pretty much everything was found in the kit! You usually never get that! I would highly recommend this! My 5 year old needed some help with some things but the bigger kids could definitely do it alone.

Excellent gift for those 8 years and above. There are 15 experiments in this kit, including making geysers, excavating dinosaurs, and the erupting volcanoes, which is what drew me to this kit in the first place. There is a lab guide, which helps make the experiments happen. This is considered an educational play kit, but it needs adult supervision if your child wants to deviate from the instructions. Very nice!

I gave this as a birthday gift to a 4 year old girl. She got to form her own volcano out of the provided modeling clay. With some adult supervision she has done several eruptions following very clear directions. Have not yet done the dinosaur part of the gift, but the volcano was a huge success.
