Great Lock!
We have done a fair amount of home automation, although not excessive. This is by far my favorite toy in the mix. A lot of our automation is fun at first and then I forget how it works because I don’t use regularly and it becomes a pain when I do need to use. Not my friend August. My husband loved being able to install on our existing deadbolt and installation was a breeze. No need to rekey and all looks normal from the exterior. Being able to lock and unlock with the app on our phone has worked flawlessly. My 12 yr old daughter uses it the most and has never had an issue. The notifications work great if you want to have that enabled. The only things to consider (not flaws) are 1) if you have it set to lock automatically make sure you have your phone with you when you go out the door or have another point of entry available in the event it locks on you and 2) it is large so if you have glass in your door make sure you have room for it and generally be prepared for it not looking all that wonderful. Definitely a function over fashion situation!

Great solution for people that forgot keys! (ME!)
Why we purchased this? We got tired of getting locked out with no option other than a locksmith. After our last lockout which ended at 9pm, we immediately searched for a smart lock. There are many but we went with August because of the ability to retain your ability to use the key externally but have the option for August to allow you to open your door with your phone. We decided to buy the August Connect as well so that we could have it connected to our home's Wifi for when we want to open the door for those that come over and we are not home and have the ability to check if we locked the door after leaving the house (sounds lame, but it happens too often). So here is my mini review: Install: Very easy, make sure that the path the deadbolt travels is clear and with no resistance. This will allow the August to function easily as it locks and unlocks the door. I had to file down the deadbolt hole in the door frame to make it work better. Take care when mounting the August to make sure that the bolt tension is only what is needed to keep it secure or the retaining clips you push down to mount the August won't e level, this took me far longer that it should have if I would have just read the instructions slower. Function: The August works great. As I stated before, between the door shut sensor and wifi Connect, it performs excellent. I've had no battery issues and plan to keep tabs on battery health. Wishlist: 1. I really wish that the android app had a shortcut on the icon to be able to lock and unlock the door. Having to open the app is something that takes too long and I end up using my key when I wish I could just use the phone. 2. I'd like to see an NFC / Bluetooth version where I could swipe my phone without opening the app to open the lock. 3. Fingerprint (Android) / Face Unlock - security for the application. I really don't want just anyone that has my phone locking and unlocking the door.

One of my favorite smart home products!
I’ve had several smart home products, some have been great and others have been pretty frustrating. The August smart lock and Wi-Fi connect is definitely in the “great” category so far. I’ve had it for several months and it just simply works. I like the fact that I can get alerts based on who opens the door and when, so I can confirm when my daughter gets home from school. Another great feature is the auto lock, since she’s not the greatest at remembering to lock the door behind herself. Now, I don’t have to worry because it’ll lock itself behind her if she doesn’t. It works well with Siri and Alexa (I don’t have a Google Home product to try) and can be added to scenes like “goodnight” to do multiple things with a single command. If you’re looking for a smart lock, the August is the one you want. It simply just works, every time.

Pros/Cons from a geek, early adopter, and smart-home enthusiast!
Wanted to give a few thoughts about my recently purchased August smart lock. For background, I’m running this lock in a decidedly “smart” house. Two Nest thermostats, a harmony hub, myQ garage, and 25+ LIFX connected lights. Pros: + Super brain-dead easy install. Took less than 10 minutes with just a philips head screwdriver. The video walkthrough on the app makes it really hard to mess up. + HomeKit integration is badass, and works flawlessly for me. There’s something soo cool tellling Siri on my cellular Apple Watch to lock/unlock the door, and it’s done. This works from inside/outside my house, on wifi, cellular, doesn’t matter. + Auto-locking is customizeable and works great. Don’t have to fish my key out to lock the door every time I take the puppers outside for a potty break. Neutral: * Doorsense, the little nubbin that you attach to your door frame that tells you if the door is open/ajar, was really easy to install and setup. So far though, doesn’t seem like a must-have feature. * Remote unlock with the included August Connect works fine, no issues so far. Takes a little bit longer than I’d like to actually connect to the lock when I’m out and about though. * a little bit pricey at $279 retail, but c’est la vie, yolo, and fomo Cons: - Auto-Unlock is finicky and unpredictable. It doesn’t work when you expect it to. This is the only reason why I gave it 3-stars instead of 5. The way it’s supposed to work is that you set your home location in the august app, and this puts a 200-meter radius around that spot (about a couple city blocks). When you (and your phone) leave this area, the lock enters “auto-unlock” mode, and is supposed to automatically unlock the next time you enter Bluetooth range (maybe 15-20 feet) or seemingly whenever you hop on to the same wifi network as the lock. Obviously, you have to keep Bluetooth on, and not force-close the app for this to work. The app will even send you a push notification when it detects that you’ve left your home area, and that the lock has entered auto-unlock mode. The problem is that it just doesn’t work 100% of the time. I’ve had instances where I did exactly as I was supposed to (left home area, got push notification saying lock was in auto-unlock mode, kept Bluetooth on and app active), and the lock doesn’t unlock even though I’m literally standing on the other side of the door. I’ve also had times when the lock won’t detect that I’ve left my neighborhood, and thus never enters auto-unlock mode in the first place. No rhyme or reason to it. On twitter, August says they’re constantly tweaking the algorithm of auto-unlock, so there’s hope that this will get better. Also, the home radius should be way less than 200-meters! I don’t live in a mega-mansion/ranch, and I shouldn’t have to wander a couple city blocks for the lock to know I’m not at home. Other random thought(s): * How badass would it be if the lock could use my cellular Apple Watch to auto-unlock?? TLDR: Easy install, auto-locking is awesome and customizable, HomeKit integration is sweet, but auto-unlocking algorithm needs more time in the oven. If “hey Siri unlock the door” from my Apple Watch didn’t work as well as it did, I’d probably return the lock. *update 11/8/17* - upgrading to 3.5 stars - Picked up the new iPhone X last week. Absolutely love this phone. Can you imagine if August put FaceID in their lock?? The future will be amazing (and a little creepy). Oh yeah, the iPhone X works fine with the August lock, no issues at all. - August issued a firmware update to the lock about a week ago (1.5.21). Auto-unlock feels like it is getting better at recognizing when I’ve arrived home. Still not 100% reliable. It sometimes takes too long for the lock to recognize that I’m standing outside (sometimes up to 5-10s). But the frequency of it working as it should is going up! Good job August, keep it coming! - If you have an iPhone, add the August widget to your lock screen. This gives you one-touch lock/unlock capability. And if you have the new iPhone X and Face ID, your phone will automatically unlock for you as soon as you look at it, so unlocking your august lock is one swipe + one tap away. - Not having to fish my key out every time I leave/come home truly is a luxury. Auto-locking works perfectly every time. And even with the ongoing auto-unlock finickiness, I feel confident enough in the lock that I removed my house key from my key ring (only the car key and mail key left!). And pulling out my phone and hitting unlock on the widget screen is still faster and more convenient than fumbling with a physical key in the dark. *update 5/25/18* - upgrading to 4.5 stars - August keeps improving the lock. Recently issued an update that makes remote connection almost instantaneous now. You don't have to manually connect to the August Connect any more either - it just does it automatically. Very cool. - Auto-unlock continues to improve. Still wish it would enter auto-away mode much sooner! One little quirk that I did not mention in the original review is that even when I enter the house from the garage on the other side of my home, the August Lock will auto-unlock. It does this reliably and consistently, even though I don't really want it to. I believe this is called out in the support documents, so it's not really a bug. It doesn't really bother me at all though, since it will always auto-lock itself after a few minutes anyway. Probably just uses the battery a little bit more is all. - Guest access keys work great so far! - Speaking of battery, I get about 3 months of use out of 4xAAs. I switched to some rechargeable eneloops, and seem to be getting a bit more use this time. *update 6/25/18* - upgrading to 5 stars - August updated the lock firmware again, and this time, it allows me to use the iphone widget to directly unlock the lock. Before, hitting the unlock button on the widget would take you to the app, and you had to tap the screen again to unlock the lock. It's so much faster now! - Still wish the away-mode radius could be smaller, but maybe it'll get there soon with how regularly August seems to be improving the lock! - Having had the lock for the better part of a year, I feel confident enough about it to recommend it to family now. Friends and family who have seen/used it have also commented on how much easier it is to use than a regular key.

Best Smartlock out there
I had the 2nd generation August smartlock that I left behind when I sold my condo. I wish I took it with me. We recently purchased a new home so I tried what was readily available at Home Depot which was the kwikset keypad type and it was horrible. You'd have to press two numbers then put in your four digit code before it would unlock. Handful of groceries? Forget about it. And no remote access ability whatsoever. As usual install and set up was easy. The connect bridge worked fine. The fact that I can add a guest is important to me. We have an active household and sometimes we need to let people in which I can do from anywhere or give them their own access. I did not receive this product for free although that would've been nice. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic Lock, Easy Installation
The August lock has been a savior. From the time I installed it which isn't your normal lies of "so easy to do" and you spend like 4 hours trying to figure one thing out and watch a ton of videos online to try and figure it out. It was literally as easy as the package states. Take off the back plate put in the new bracket screw it in add the August Smartlock and you're finished! As for setup it went pretty much flawlessly. My only issue was getting the Connect Wi-Fi bridge to work because our router was wonky. After a reset it worked fine. Walking up to the door: door opens (given bluetooth and location are on) Leaving the house: not brave enough to not lock the door because our door hinge sometimes doesn't sit flush (in which DoorSense tells you it's not full closed. But I have locked the door successfully when away when I forgot to lock the door. The auto-lock feature is cool and can be set to a timer which I promptly locked myself out of the house and ended up screaming the passcode through the door to Alexa who opened the door. Alexa: can be used to open (with a passcode) and lock the August Smartlock. Convenient but not really needed unless you live in a god damn mansion. Overall I'd give it a 10/10 for setup and a 10/10 for usage. Would strongly recommend getting one for anyone who fumbles around for keys in the dark coming home late for work or anyone who uses their house as an AirBnb or rental it makes it easy to have no keys and keep an eye on who goes in and out of the house via the log which is very accurate.

Outstanding smart deadbolt for SmartThings-enabled homes
I have been beta-testing the August Smart Lock Pro for two months at this point, so I'm definitely well-acquainted with the device's features, strengths, and limitations. And let me preface this review with a question that I'm sure you're asking yourself: Yes, the August Smart Lock Pro works wonderfully with the Samsung SmartThings home automation platform. I'm going to break my review down into three parts: Quality, Functionality, Software, and Value. ⇨ Quality If you're at all familiar with the previous generation August Smart Locks, the Pro will feel very familiar. In fact, the Pro has basically the same exterior design and all-metal construction as previous generations. And if you're not familiar with August products, you're definitely in for a treat. As soon as I took the lock out of its box, I was struck by the weight of the lock and just how substantial it feels. Compared to the faux-metal and mostly-plastic construction of certain competing products, the August Smart Lock Pro has incredible build quality. Of course, being that the lock gets installed on your door, its weight doesn't really make a difference and, at least for me, is actually a pro because I want products that pertain to the security of my home to feel substantial. A plastic smart lock just wouldn't make me feel very safe, so I really appreciate the time and effort (not to mention the added expense) that this high-quality metal build required. ⇨ Functionality The August Smart Lock Pro has been my first experience with owning a smart lock in my own home although I have friends and relatives who own them; however, I'm a tech writer and reviewer, so although I hadn't personally owned one yet, I was already fairly knowledgeable about smart locks. I knew what they're able to do, what they're not able to do, and so on. To use the August Smart Lock Pro, at a minimum you'll need (1) the actual lock, (2) a smartphone, and (3) the August app; however, there are additional pieces -- i.e., (4) the August Connect WiFi Bridge and (5) DoorSense sensor, both of which are included in the box -- that will greatly expand the lock's functionality. As mentioned above (and as is the case with previous-generation August Locks), the bare essentials for using the Pro is the actual lock and a smartphone; with this setup, your sole means of operating the lock is via Bluetooth by using the app. Bluetooth is definitely the most reliable and "snappiest" way to operate the August Smart Lock Pro. Alternately, you can connect to the lock via Wifi, which requires the August Connect Wifi Bridge (which, as I stated previously, is included in the box with the August Smart Lock Pro). Basically, the Connect plugs into the outlet closest to the August Smart Lock Pro to translate and relay commands issued from your smartphone via Wifi or your mobile data network into Bluetooth commands that the Connect sends to the lock. Admittedly, this is more of a roundabout and almost cumbersome way of utilizing wifi when many competitors' products have Wifi actually built into the locks, which means that they don't require the use of external equipment and a daisy-chain of commands between devices. I will say, though, that it's generally been reliable despite it inevitably having slightly less-than-ideal latency. In other words: With Bluetooth, your commands go directly from your smartphone to the lock, but with Wifi, your commands go from your smartphone to the August Connect and finally to the August Smart Lock Pro. As I said, this is nearly as reliable as using Bluetooth, but it can sometimes be a bit slower than using Bluetooth. Regarding the use of Wifi versus Bluetooth, my biggest issue is that, when you open the August app, you must tap on the Wifi toggle to connect to the lock via Wifi as it does not know to do this automatically. So if you're at work and want to unlock your front door at home, you must open the August app and tap on the Wifi toggle, otherwise the app will begin trying to connect to the lock via Bluetooth. Once you're used to it, this doesn't take a whole lot of thought, but it unfortunately adds an extra step to the process. Anytime you want to control the lock via the app, you have to stop for a second and think about how you need to connect to the lock to make sure it receives your commands. Basically, it comes down to remembering that when you're within 30-ish feet of the lock, you'll be using Bluetooth; any other time you'll probably be using Wifi, including when you're not at home and want to operate the lock remotely. I just wish the app defaulted to the Wifi connection unless it either (a) detects proximity to the lock via Bluetooth or (b) recognizes that you're at home via GPS or by identifying your home Wifi network; hopefully, this will come in the future as August continues to refine and improve the lock and app. Besides the included August Connect, another piece of hardware that comes with the August Smart Lock Pro is the DoorSense sensor. This is arguably the second most-valuable feature that the Pro brings (you've probably already guessed the first most-valuable, but I'll get to that in a moment) as it gives the August Smart Lock Pro the ability to reliably detect when the door is open. This might seem like a small feature, but it's something than virtually no other lock can do and ensures the lock doesn't engage while the door is open. Plus, it makes something like auto-locking with a delay -- i.e., having the door automatically lock after a predetermined number of minutes once you've closed the door -- much more accurate and generally smoother. I said that DoorSense is probably the second most-valuable feature that the Pro brings to the August Smart Lock line. Well, in case you hadn't already guessed, the number one most-valuable feature is definitely the lock's Z-wave compatibility. Although August products have been compatible with the Wink platform in the past, it's only with the Pro that an August lock is finally compatible with Samsung SmartThings. Of course, this August-Lock-Pro-and-SmartThings integration is still in its infancy (official "Works with SmartThings" certification is actually on its way), but it already works beautifully as far as the core features go. Using the SmartThings app/platform, you can lock and unlock the Pro as well as begin incorporating the lock into your automations. If you've invested in smart home technology, particularly with the SmartThings platform, this is really exciting and is undoubtedly a feature that previous-generation August users have been waiting for. *As a side note, the August Smart Lock Pro's Z-wave functionality is built directly into the lock and not facilitated by the August Connect bridge. In fact, the August Connect has no effect on the lock's Z-wave capabilities at all; you can even operate the lock via Z-wave without setting up the August Connect. The August Connect is used solely to facilitate remote operations, allowing you to lock/unlock the August Smart Lock Pro when you're outside of the lock's Bluetooth range. ⇨ Software Even though I could have included it under "Functionality," I decided to give the app its own section because I have quite a bit to say about the overall software experience. As I stated at the start of this review, I've been testing the August Smart Lock Pro for over two months at this point. Initially, I was basically using the version of the August app that's publicly available from the Google Play and Apple App Stores; however, I've since been using an unreleased beta version of the August app, which brings some enhancements and improvements as well as some new features into the mix. I wanted to take a second to highlight some of them in this review. If you've ever used an August lock, you're probably familiar with how the "locked" and "unlocked" statuses are denoted by red and green circles, respectively. Once you get used to what each color means, it's pretty intuitive, but for first-time August users there can be a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately, there's now labels beneath the circles that essentially eliminate the guesswork; this might seem like a small feature, but it really adds to the user-friendliness of the August Smart Lock Pro. Another new feature that's been brought to the beta app -- and which is either already in the public version of the app or will be coming to the public version soon -- is Smart Alerts. Basically, this feature allows you to customize the notifications you get from the August app as the lock is used. For example, you can setup the Smart Alerts so that you'll receive notifications if the door is ever left open (made possible by the DoorSense sensor), or when certain users (or guests) lock/unlock the deadbolt, or when the lock is auto-locked or auto-unlocked, and so on. Again, this is the type of feature that seems really small and menial, and admittedly there aren't a ton of Smart Alerts from which to choose right now, but I can see Smart Alerts growing significantly and offering a variety of different use cases in the near future. Plus, I really feel like the Smart Alerts feature has a ton of potential as a means of facilitating the integration of complementary third-party home automation services in a manner similar to IFTTT. Many of the other built-in software features have gotten more robust, too. In particular, the auto-lock and auto-unlock features. The auto-unlock feature now asks you how you travel home (i.e., by car, public transport, bike, etc.) and asks you to identify your home Wifi network; with this information, the app can better detect when you're arriving home (which is indicated to the August app by the connecting of your smartphone to your home Wifi network) so the auto-unlock feature is more reliable. And there have been a lot of changes similar to this, making many of the features found in the app (especially those that are located under the lock's settings menu) much more powerful and customizable. It's also getting easier to update the lock, especially as the lock is either currently on or will soon be on final firmware. I would like to see a more intuitive way to check for updates, perhaps an option under the lock's settings menu much like you see on Android and iOS smartphones, but currently it's done by tapping the settings icon in the top-righthand corner of the app, tapping on "Home" (or whatever you name your home location), and connecting to the lock. Of course, you need to be connected via Bluetooth for the lock to download the update, but otherwise it's a pretty straightforward process that has gotten easier over my weeks of using the lock. ⇨ Value If there's one drawback to the August Smart Lock Pro, it might be the price. On the one hand, I'm someone who believes in the expression: "You get what you pay for." Particularly when it comes to something like home security, I feel like it's better to pay a little more for a well-made and reliable product than to pinch pennies only to end up with an inferior product. However, considering that many of the features the Pro brings to the August line (particularly the Z-wave compatibility) are offered by competitors at somewhat lower price points, the August Smart Lock Pro could probably come down in price a little bit, even to something like $229 or even $249. But it's worth noting that the August Pro now comes with the August Connect, which previously cost more than $70 to buy separately if you wanted to be able to control previous-generation August locks remotely, so maybe the additional cost is justified. In fact, when you think of it that way, the August Pro's $279 cost breaks down to the $199 of the previous-generation Smart Lock + $80 for the August Connect, Z-wave, and DoorSense, so perhaps the August Smart Lock Pro is a better value than I thought. Obviously, it's going to be subjective and depend on the types of features that you find most important, and whether those features are available from and as good on competing products. ⇨ Bottom Line In short, I enthusiastically recommend the August Smart Lock Pro. Previous-generation August Smart Locks were a favorite among smart-home enthusiasts, but many users lamented the absence of Z-wave, prohibiting its integration with the SmartThings platform. Fortunately, the Pro corrects that by adding Z-Wave Plus (yes, it's the 'Plus' version with greatly enhanced range) as well as the DoorSense technology into the package. Additionally, the included August Connect bridge will help to facilitate all the automations you can now do with this August Smart Lock. Although the Pro is my first smart lock experience, it may very well be my last as I am very impressed and quite happy with this lock. Thank you August team. If you have any questions about the August Smart Lock Pro, I'd be happy to answer them so don't hesitate to ask by posting a comment on my review. *Photo 1: Profile view of August Smart Lock Pro, unlocked. *Photo 2: Profile view of August Smart Lock Pro, locked. *Photo 3: View of DoorSense sensor embedded into door frame. Auto-unlock/lock, Digital Guest keys, full-Manual backup + rock solid Homekit integration!
My top priories while searching for a smart lock for the 1st time were: - Full-automation for locking/unlocking the door - Visibility into the status of the door and ability to lock/unlock it from anywhere at anytime - Ability to easily give visitors or contractors access, while also managing and restricting that access However, my WIFE’s one and only concern was having a fully-MANUAL backup option that she could easily use if issues were ever to occur or she couldn’t get it to work lol. This lock has somehow managed to meet BOTH of our requirements in a single package, and more importantly, helped my wife COMpletely overcome her general fear of these types of devices! PROS: ———————— The primary reasons I bought this smart lock over the others I reviewed including the: Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen, and Ultraloq UL3 are: - Ability to maintain existing external lock & use my existing key to manually open the door whenever needed: —This is not only convenient it’s also more secure. Because this lock sits on the back of the door, no one can tell from the outside that you even have a smart lock therefore negating the possibly of people trying to “hack” it or anything else. — Neither the Kevo or Ultraloq can claim this as both make it clearly evident from outside that you have a smart lock. - Auto Un-Lock Function: You can set up a geo-fence around your home that will automatically lock the door when you exit that area, and automatically unlock it when you come home. This seems like a small thing but in reality it has completely changed how we interact with our home. — I no longer have to fumble with keys while holding groceries and my backpack, I also don’t have to worry about wonder if I locked the door when I’m in a rush on my way to work in the morning, I just close the door and walk away knowing the lock will do it’s thing! - Ability to send virtual “Guest” keys to visitors and contractors with user-specified durations and auto-expiration: —The KwikSet Kevo did have the option to send guest eKeys, but they were limited to 24hrs max and not available on all devices. Ultraloq did not offer this capability at all. - Ease of use and install + HomeKit integration: The installation of this lock took no more than 15 minutes start to finish. That is including setting up the Wi-Fi connect module, and connecting it HomeKit. — At the time of review (Dec, 18) The Ultraloq did not have ANY kind of smart home integration ability, while the Kevo sis have Alexa just not Homekit or Google Home. Problem is, to use with either one you need to buy a separate $100 hub that will be used for NOTHING else! CONS/Potential Future Improvements: ———————— There are a few shortcomings/enhancements I would like to see addressed in a version 3: - Additional unlocking options besides auto-unlock or manually clicking “Unlock” from within the app. — One thing both of the other locks I looked at had going for them was multiple ways to unlock besides the core Bluetooth functionality. Having the ability to unlock my door by maybe tapping my phone 3 times on it, or by using an “at-home” setting that works like the regular auto-unlock but does so repeatedly would be very nice. — It is a bit of a pain to have to pull out my phone or watch because the door has locked while I was going in/out the garage working on something. - Integration of the Wi-Fi functionality into the lock itself instead of needing a separate connect module. — I understand August’ reasoning as a Wi-Fi module would add heft and also drain battery life much quicker but at least giving users the option would be nice. Maybe add a rechargeable lithium-ion battery to both address the Wi-Fi power consumption issues and negate the need to replace AA batteries all together. - Ability to have multiple locks set to auto-unlock upon arriving at home: Again I understand the reasoning but sometimes I’m bringing different items that I can’t fit through the garage door and I need to go through the front, having both unlock for a set period of time would make things that much easier. - Always show a “Battery Life Remaining” indicator in the app instead of waiting till they are almost dead and saying: “batteries are low and need to be replaced.” - Lastly, and one of my only true concerns, streamline the Guest sign-up process!! — The flexibility of being able to send digital keys to guests is wonderful, however, making those guest download the August app AND create and account just to use that digital key is a bit much! It almost defeats the “ease of use” principle in the 1st place... — Instead of this, I would expect to see a streamlined process that brings users to a simply laid out HTML5 webpage explaining the sign-up process and how to use the key. It would then ask them for permission to query the device for its unique Bluetooth signature in order to link the phone to the lock, no August acct required. (I can examine technically how this would work but all you non-engineers out there would gloss over :) so August contact me if you want to know!) Overall I am quite pleased with this device, in fact I liked it so much I bought a used 1st gen one for my garage door too! All of the above functions have so far made for a seamless experience and although there are some small issues, they are irritations at best. If you are looking for an all-encompassing smart lock with rock solid Homekit integration, (and your still reading my review at this point!), you have found it. Don’t add it to a list, don’t read any more reviews, just go ahead and buy this thing now: your wife will thank you!
