This recorder far exceeded my expectations, as I purchased it half expecting it wouldn't do what I needed it to. As a result of my experience, I will try to pack some extra information in my review that will answer some questions people might have about how it works. It is a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that can also act as a Digital Voice Recorder (Audio only) with the throw of a switch. The device does function as a recorder while it is being charged or is plugged in, and will use the cable for energy before using it's own internal battery. I have this thing plugged into a high capacity USB battery continuously recording for over 100 hours every week (during my work week) in Audio only. I have done this for several weeks in a row now, and the device does continue to function and record in a loop until I turn it off Friday afternoon to recharge the battery bank or let the device rest/reset. The device DOES record in a loop, rewriting it's previous recordings starting from the oldest BUT it has one critical flaw with this function. The device ONLY overwrites the space it used during it's opening recording session... meaning that if you only use up half of the SD Card in the device the first time you use it, then the next time you use it, it will overwrite the previous data starting with the oldest file INSTEAD of continuing to fill the rest of the SD card first. This is awful if you want to use this device for short sessions and expect it to keep a persistent record... but for me, it works fine as I record in very large blocks of time. Sound quality is acceptable for my purposes. I keep it in a bag, in a noisy environment, and it is possible to discern conversations nearby. No awards for clarity, but it works. I cannot comment on the camera portion, nor the infrared lights, as I do not use it for video recording. I cannot comment on the internal battery life, as I do not use it. Pros: -Price -Can charge while in recording -Can record over a very long period of time without reset (100 hours at least, consuming roughly 10,000-15,000 mAh in this time on Audio only) IF provided external source of power -Small incremental save files that over-write from the oldest (oldest decided by file name, and the last file to be over-written - it is persistent in this regard, so if you stop then start again it remembers the last file it overwrote and will start re-writing in sequence from the proper file) -Easy to use controls, and clear indicators that it is working as intended (even on shutdown it will tell you with blinking LEDs that it is wrapping things up and shutting down) Cons: -Flawed memory management (fails to use the rest of the SD cards storage space if not written completely in the first use) -I cannot figure out how to fix the time stamps, or to get the device to know what time it is to accurately record when the file was made/modified... this means that the contents of the recording itself must provide evidence for when the recording was taken. -Sound quality is sub-par (but acceptable)
