Denon Upgraddd my S740H to S940H
This is an updated review for the S940H replacement Denon has provided for theS740H. The Denon website had a misprint indicating the S740H has up scaling capabilities, which is not true. Denon replaced the S740H with the S940H which upscales. I greatly appreciated Denon’s respons and I am happy we th the Unit provided. Don’t expect any video control over the quality of the output. Very limited menu and restrictive unnecessarily. They forgot the V in AVR.

Awesome entry-level 7 channel AVR for Atmos/DTS:X!
Had the Denon AVR-S740H for over a month now (brought it during Thanksgiving week) and I've been really impressed with the receiver so far. It replaced the Pioneer VSX-532 due to HDMI glitches and a few other minor bugs with that unit which resulted me on getting rid of it. The build quality on the Denon is decent, it feels as if it's going to last for many years to come and the remote control is equally good too. The overall sound quality is awesome if not better than any other receiver I've used in the past, I'm currently running 7.1 surround sound and it sounds very good. The Audyssey MultiEQ calibration is executed well and leaps ahead of MCCAA calibration from Pioneer. The new upmixers Dolby Surround and DTS Neural X both give a new breath of fresh air to stereo and 5.1 sources (so far I prefer the latter upmixer). HEOS Music is pretty good too so far. And HDMI passthrough including HDR10 is for the most problem-free. The only con I've had with the receiver so far is the menu UI looks like old computer graphics from the early 2000s, time for Denon to step it up a little bit right there. In conclusion the Denon AVR-S740H is for sure a great entry-level 7 channel receiver and it's even better if you can get it at a good deal than the regular price ($479). Maybe once I experienced the two new immersive formats Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, I might give this review a update, same with Dolby Vision HDR. Quick technical specs: -165 watts per channel for 6-ohm speakers -75 watts per channel for 8-ohm speakers -6 HDMI inputs (5 in the back, 1 in the front) -Phono input -2 Composite video inputs -2 Optical inputs and 1 Coaxial input -HDR passthrough (supports HLG, HDR10, & Dolby Vision) -Dolby formats: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos -DTS formats: DTS Digital Surround, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X UPDATE (5th March, 2019): I now have a 5.1.2 speaker configuration setup since nearly two weeks ago and to be honest I find Front Heights to be even more immersive than Back Surrounds (aka 7.1). Over the past two weekends I've watched some 4K Blu-rays with Dolby Atmos and/or DTS:X audio such as Overlord (which is Atmos) and Kin (which is DTS:X) for examples, all performed a neat job on this receiver. While in-ceiling speakers give you the best overall performance for the two immersive formats, if you're not allowed to do in-ceiling speakers (especially if due to apartment reasons), I'd would definitely go the Front Height speaker route before going with the Atmos-enabled speaker route by getting a pair of SVS Prime Elevation speakers or even use a pair of bookshelf speakers to mount on the wall that is just 3-5 inches from touching the ceiling.

Great quality, easy setup, HEOS streaming is amazing, Alexa could use work
Everything that was great about my old 1080p-supporting Denon amp is great about this one. Easy setup with Audyssey, great sound quality, very versatile cabling options, nice features generally. Just what you want from a home theater system, only now with 4k. I'm not sure how much my system has the Denon doing upscaling -- that might be being done on my Roku or TV -- but if it is the Denon, it's fantastic. Even old ST:TOS looked amazing on my 4k TV. New in this generation (at least to me) is HEOS, and I am utterly sold. I added a pair of HEOS 1 speakers in other rooms, and I love being able to bring music with me around the house, in perfect synch. (Though they seem to have missed one obvious feature here: I can add the bedroom to the living room, for instance, but I can't then subtract the living room, thus "moving" the music into another room and freeing up where it started for something else.) I'm streaming Amazon Music and Pandora mostly, though experiments with iHeartRadio were just as impressive. It's a nice interface, and it just works. The Alexa skill doesn't do as much as you'd expect, is hit or miss, and was tricky to set up, only because Denon's instructions are skimpy and leave out a few steps. But when it's all set up, I can ask Alexa to play stuff on any particular speaker or the home theater system, and it almost always works. Sometimes she says that this amp doesn't support that, but then try again and it works. Asking her to play a specific thing from a specific service is a bit trickier, as she seems to keep trying to second-guess me, but I'm not sure how much of that is Denon's skill's fault. What she can't do reliably is change inputs on the Denon: out of dozens of attempts, I've had it work once, which is enough to prove it's possible, but the vast majority of the times, she says it doesn't support that. Denon could stand to put some attention to improving this, and also their documentation of it. The HEOS and AVR Remote apps are solid and easy to use. In fact, where we've always had his-and-hers remotes, I'm going to just let myself get by on the app for me. It might be nice if the HEOS app included the AVR Remote functions so a single app did both jobs, but I can understand their reasons for keeping them separate. A slightly quicker startup would be nice too. In all, a great heart to my home theater. Very pleased with my choice. I will probably get another HEOS speaker or two eventually.

Denon AVR-S940H - Very Nice
Excellent features, especially for the price. The Microphone setup for the Audyssey dynamic eq speaker calibration was easy and set the balance up perfect. Setup showed me a mid channel speaker wire that the cat had partially chewed through. I'm running Infinity L/R and center and Polk Audio rears and surrounds. The sound quality is excellent. I have a 16 year old Onkyo TX-DS989 AV receiver that was also 7.1, however it was lacking a few of the more modern audio codec streaming protocols and it could not convert a 5.1 codec into a virtual 7.1 codec. This Denon is about the same WPC but has HDMI interfaces, Bluetooth and a comprehensive on screen menu via the HDMI-CEC to the TV. If I set this up with Dolby Atmos High Speakers I may come back and submit another review.

this thing surprises me sonically
i wish this had an input jack 1/4 but it does have rca input. the menu that displays on the tv looks (what's the right words?) super efficient, dull, easy, cost effective, whatever. it's easy to use and works but people with oohh la la pizazz for a menu might be let down. had onkyo 676, the menu looked better, the sound might be just a hint more powerful but it died 4 months later and it surely didn't sound as great as the denon. why? i have 2 speakers on bike racks in a small room as upright/ atmos but a 5.1.2 setup. and sound all around me engulfing and moving around. it's beautiful. better than the onkyo ever did, even after me trying to adjust it. the sound/ mic setup for denon is a little more strenuous (a few minutes and not much work) than the onkyo but a super great beautiful sound difference in return. i'm not sure what really expensive amps sound like and my setup is in a small room but for the price it makes my speakers sing and my world bathed in the color of sound. it would be fine in any mid sized family room too. not sure in super large as in super large environments. i believe my Wharfedale - Diamond 10.2 is the hardest speakers i have to drive and i use them for my rear. denon has no trouble pushing them. i hear them easily compared to the onkyo and i turned the rear on the onkyo up and still blah. i love it. oh, the amp build is great. just some things on youtube and only youtube use the center channel only but there are different settings on the amp but what evs.

We needed a receiver with 7.2 capability and option for turntable. This unit has all the audio and accessories options we needed and also is a very easy setup. Although the on-screen setup “look” is last decade I personally like the user interface and particularly the built in Audyssey MultEQ. We have several different speaker manufacturers in our system and Audyssey MultEQ takes out most of the hassle in calibrating and matching speaker outputs and makes it all work without me breaking a sweat. The back of unit is clean and straight forward while offering all the options for hookups we needed. Remote is much easier to understand than our previous (and higher end) Denon AVR. I would rate this unit a 4.5 out of 5.

Great product. Disappointing remote.
This is a great amp. Setup is magical with the Audyssey microphone. Sound is awesome. The quick start guide is all you need to get up and running. The options and controls are dazzling. There is a phone input - which I plan to use someday. Really. It's one of the reasons I picked this amp. My beefs, after a month, are for the company - if they look at the reviews, and not to discourage anyone from buying this. The on-screen displays are WAY too bright and there is no adjustment except to get rid of them. Also they last WAY too long - 7 seconds instead of 1 second. So I just got rid of them. The remote is sad after using the amp. The most important button - the MUTE - should fall first to your finger. It doesn't. The channel buttons are left and the volume right. Why can't this be standardized - with volume on the LEFT? There is no backlight - and the buttons have tiny lettering and are all the same. After using the terrific Comcast remote, all the others seem like junk. UI people need to study the Comcast remote. And please issue a fix for the on-screen displays.

Great sound and picture, extends your home entertainment
Easy menu for setup, optimized speaker setting and video/audio components. I have five channels in my family room and four components. Easy setup of integrated ROKU, TIVO, Blu-ray and Apple iOS streaming or Airplay. Note - there is an issue with this model AVRS640H with the firmware update - DON'T DO IT. I did and it killed the menus. Spent an hour waiting and then talking to tech support on the phone and they said to return it. But had also sent an email online - the response was helpful - they were able to give me instructions to rollback the update (telephone support didn't know this) power off, press and hold the power-info-sleep buttons and it will roll back.

DENON 4K RECEIVER
Awesome audio and video. No glitches with a connected Apple 4K TV or my 4K UHD SONY Blu-ray player. Blows away my old SONY.

Excellent sound and connectivity features. Denon apps/Alex skill are solid despite negative reviews.
This is a great receiver and I highly recommend it. The set up and calibration is easy and it has great connectivity including many streaming services such as Pandora, Amazon Music, Spotify, TuneIn, etc. Additionally, it works with Alexa. It works with two Denon apps (Heos and AVR Remote) and one Alexa skill (Heos). Reviews of the apps and the skill were terrible but I’m not sure what the reviewers’ problems were since I connected the receiver to my network (which uses three Google WiFi mesh router devices, sidebar: I HIGHLY recommend these) and everything worked great. As suggested in another review, I renamed the device “Stereo” and simply say to Alexa: “Alexa, play [station] on Pandora on Stereo” and it does! The Heos app is good enough for selecting various streaming sources and controlling basic functions like volume while the remote app allows more control of the receiver through you phone or tablet. After calibration the receiver sounds amazing and I’m not even using the advanced modes like Atmos (I have a basic 5.1 speaker set-up in our living room with zone 2 speakers in our screened porch). The predecessor to this (730H) is basically the same and has won multiple “best home theater receiver” awards. It is well worth the money in my view!
