I purchased this as my first set of gouache, and I have to say it's already my new favorite medium! the colors are gorgeous, they blend super well, and they stay super opaque as long as they aren't heavily diluted. The jelly cups are genius, so after a color runs out you can refill it with color from a tube. The lid snaps on tight, and the whole thing is actually larger than I expected; it's actually bigger than an ice cube tray. I read in a couple reviews that people had an issue with the paint getting on the little plastic palette when it's kept inside the lid, so I just keep it separate. Just as a note: the bright purple came a little separated, and still separates a bit over time, but just give it a stir with your brush or other chosen tool and it's perfectly fine. I would recommend using this on thick paper, as it is paint that acts as a cross between watercolor and acrylic. I've been using mixed media that's a 98 pound paper, and also toned tan and gray that are 80 pound papers (if you do art a lot, you'll know what this means, otherwise, the higher the number the thicker the paper; printer paper is about 20 pound and watercolor paper is about 140). TL,DR: BUY THIS!! You will not regret it. Amazing, great price. 11/10 would recommend!!!

Gouache is still a new medium for me, and I have use a few other brands, both student and artist grade before, and have had lackluster results. It was definitely frustrating. This set has made me appreciate the medium a lot. I actually now enjoy using gouache, because of this set! Let me get to the pros and cons: Pros: -Cute packaging and design (I feel that the presentation of this product also helps me have fun using this set). -30 ml cups of gouache-This is a LOT of paint, I've being using them so much, but there is still a lot of paint left! - Miya Arts actually offer refills for these paints, so if you do end up using it all up, you have options to replace the paints(and with colors of choice)! -Vibrant colors and can easily be rewet. The 18 colors are a great starter selection, and beginners should not be intimidated by mixing. Intermediate painters will enjoy this as well. -There are 2 whites! This set has a zinc white, which is useful for mixing, and a titanium white, which is great for highlights and coverage. -The wide mouth of the jelly cups are great for those who like to paint large, using large brushes. Cons: -It is heavy. This set is marketed as travel friendly, but I do not agree. I think this is more suitable for studio/home use. -The extra mixing palette that is included is the same color as the box itself. This can mess with our perception when mixing colors. I rather that it was white. -This isn't an issue for me, but for those of you who are professional illustrators and sell your work, these paints have no lightfast or pigment information. That means that there are NO guarantee that any of your paintings done with these gouache will last 10+ years. I definitely feel that both beginner/hobbyist and intermediate gouache painters will enjoy this set. It is lovely to look at, and will last a long time. The most important thing is to have fun painting, and I have not felt frustration at all when practicing with these paints. A must have in any artists' art supply collection!

This is a great gouache set! The pigments are intense so a little goes a long way with a smooth, matte finish. I only peeled back the foil lids half way, and scooped out the paint with my pallet knife. Hoping this prevents any possible mess, but the lid does snap tight, no issues so far! It is on the heavy side but the price is great for the amount of paint you receive, this will last a long time! Very happy with it!

Comparing this to other gouache paint sets, I thought this price maybe to good to be true, I was wrong. This is an incredibly huge amount of paint for what it is. This case/box is quite weighty and you may have to transfer small amounts to a mini case, if you would like it to be easily portable. But I don't see that as a negative, just get a pill separator for like a $1 and scoop in the colors you want. I am new to gouache but the difference from pressed/chalk watercolors is amazing. This is so much more opaque but you can thin it out with water to be thinner and A LOT of water to be more translucent. With chalk watercolors, you can layer all you want and you won't get much darker colors, probably just a hole in your paper. This is great to paint on other surfaces besides paper also, since it is opaque enough to be seen and thick enough to stick. If you usually paint with acrylic but wanted something you could thin out without losing color, this is it! I would say this gouache is thicker than acrylic, it may be closer in thickness to oil paint. So you will have to water it down, to even paint like with acrylics. But since this set comes with such a big amount of paint, you have plenty to practice with to get the consistency you want. I don't think it can compare with oil paint except that you could probably layer it without watering it down to get a textured affect. If you are using this as mostly watercolor, it should last a really long time. If it dries out at all, it's still perfectly fine, since you are going to add water to use it anyway. This set is great for beginners and I can't speak for other levels of experience but I'm going to guess it's still pretty good.

I've never used gouache before, so I have no clue of its good or bad. I love this stuff. I paint like a three yr old and this stuff is thick and has rich colors. Makes me so happy to use it. Isn't that what art is about? There is so much paint, I'll be busy for a long time. To travel with it may not be so good. This stuff is heavy. Like brick heavy. If you have a travel case and put some paint in I think it would work 👍. Ps the lid didn't snap shut. I contacted them and within a week I got a NEW case. OMG this company is GREAT. Nice service. They said weeks because it's coming from China, but it was about a week. THANK YOU. Now to order some for my grandkids. They will love it!!!

I'm having a really great time using these paints! The Quality of the paint is great and you get a lot of it for your money. The packaging is sturdy, and very very cute. (Side note here: The palette is bigger than you think it is!) It Even comes with a built in mixing palette. Thus far the quality of the paints themselves have been marvelous. My only concern is that I have yet to find a way to buy refills and I really want to buy refills or maybe alternate colors so I can swap out my jelly cups.

these paints are beautiful, pigmented, and will definitely last me for quite awhile. the case is durable and a hard, heavy plastic which is exactly what i’ve been craving in these kits. gouache is a more unforgiving medium than watercolors in some ways, so to say that this is “good for beginners” is a bit of a stretch. good for beginners when it comes to gouache? yes. but not good for beginners who are inexperienced with watercolor or other paint mediums. they blend beautifully, dry faster than watercolors, but be sure to use nice paper and not something like printer paper. i am amazed with this medium though. kinda sad that they don’t label each cup and that the cups don’t come with individual tops. tip: label them somehow. i used blank stickers and wrote the names of each color. it’s a bit overwhelming at first when you open them up to notice that they’re all individual cups and don’t have tops. but once you get used to them, you won’t find that much pain in using them. attached is an example of the nuance in color i created in like ten minutes. and a pic of the way i labeled the colors.

These are nice. Very opaque and creamy, and they water down smooth as well. Rewetting the jelly cubes is no hassle, they reactivate easy, and blend beautifully. (The whites are also different, picture included so you can see there is a slight difference between the two) Taking off the plastic covers was annoying, took about 10 minutes and I had to scrape off the top of the cover onto the jelly so I didn't waste any pigment. However, I do like the functionality of the cups themselves, I can constantly switch things around or just take a couple jellies on the road. The palette is hefty too, very heavy duty plastic that doesn't feel cheap or flimsy in the slightest. The mixing palette they include is okay, I don't love colored mixing pans, I prefer white or neutral gray, so I opt for mine, but that's no biggie. Another thing, is the opened jellies don't smear on the mixing tray or the lid when the palette is closed, although, if you dropped it upside down it'd be a different story of course. Overall, very nice and easy to use. The swatches were of the wet paint before it was dried. One opaque swatch and then one thinned with water. Once the paint dried, it cracked heavily, but it doesn't affect the reactivation.

I was so excited when it came. As a person who does watercolor a lot, the first time I use gouache is kind of hard for me to change the habit by using too much water. I hope I can get better. I love how they come with a palette, and all the space of the colors was full. The best thing about this product is that they give you two white! Bad thing I did was when I first got it, I open all the color which make me later have a hard time to keep all them as clean as possible. I feel this gouache set is not good for taking out cause the paint may spread a little bit after you move from place to place(that may because I opened all the colors) I also have to use a watering can keep them from drying(cause I always open them while I'm drawing) I may come back for a second one, hope they not going to change a lot.

This is a super affordable, somewhat unusual gouache. Unlike tube gouache, the individual paints come in little tubs, much like pudding containers. The colors are highly saturated, mix and blend well. They recommend peeling off the metallic tops and relying on the snap tight lid. I'm guessing that it would probably allow the paints to stay hydrated and almost gel-like, but I live in a VERY dry climate, so I peeled up one corner of each color, and gently reseal them after use, in addition to reattaching the super tight lid. I have many different types of gouache and consider myself a bit more advanced than a beginner, but I would recommend this product to any level painter, interested in either adding to, or starting a gouache painting.
