I love my echo dot. I have four of them and they really help make my life easier. They can control almost everything, lights, locks TV, music, thermostat. It hears you almost all of the time and I've run into very few issues with it overall. I really couldn't ask for a more helpful device. It's even more handy when I found that I could get a battery base for it. The GGMM D3 base that I found lets me carry the alexa dot around pretty much anywhere. I love that I can take it into the bathroom with me and listen to music while I shower or take it outside and listen to music. That's really the only thing I think it was missing.

I was debating between this and the regular echo. I've had both and we both know what the echo does so all I'll talk about is the sound quality. I'm going to get to the chase. This is the BEST speaker I've ever heard for under $50. The functions of the echo along with the music playing functionality and the sound quality makes it a steal at this price point. The sound is great for its size. It can get pretty loud but the bass is definitely lacking. The bass isn't god awful but it just isn't there. Now I will say this... if your primary motivation for a speaker is to listen to music, go with the echo. If it is but your budget is under $50 then go with the dot. It won't blow anyone away during a get together in your living room but it'll get the job done. The dot will only flourish is an enclosed space. It needs walls nearby to bounce off to cover up the weakness of the bass. If I had to compare the sound to another speaker, I'd say the UE Wonderboom or the older Beats Pill, all of which suffer from weak bass. For the size, I was impressed by the sound but with the Echo at its refurbished price of $69 I'll have to aim towards that direction. I'd recommend this for someone who needs an echo for their kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. It's just not going to hold down a living room unfortunately but overall, I like the sound and if I need a second echo, I'll definitely get a dot.

This is how it all begins. The end of man. Alexa took over my house. It’s started on Black Friday 2019. Amazon offered a deal that couldn’t be beat. Once I had SkyNet.. I mean Alexa hooked up and running it began. I got lazy, really lazy and I loved it. I was hooked. I ordered six more echos. I ordered smart light bulbs and Smart light switches, smart thermostat and smart plugs and Ring cams. It won’t end. Now Alexa is everywhere. Listening. Judging me. Watching. Probably waiting for the right time to strike a blow in America’s heartland. It’s a slow process. But Alexa is patient. I’m so lazy now, I don’t get up to turn the light off or change my thermostat. I can even see who’s at the door from my couch. I’m gaining weight slowly. And in a few decades I’ll die, probably of heart disease. The calories I burned moving around are now being stored around my mid section. My LDL is out of whack. All because I bought an Alexa enabled device On Black Friday 2019. I can hear my arteries clogging as we speak. In the end I was weak. I let the machines win.

I almost returned this to seller as I wasn't able to get it to connect to my wifi. After getting an error message from the app to scan I of course called the help line. I hung up on two of the Indonesia people I talked to as the first wanted me to purchase security software for my router. BS.. The second time I told them I was going to through it away and they hu g up on me and the third time i asked for someone who could speak English. He said there all busy but he did attempt to help me which led me to going to alexa.amazon.com and syncing it up there. After a few minutes of going through the links I got it to scan. Keep in mind I did restart my router before this but not sure if that had anything to do with fixing it. Anyway go to the link above and sign in with your amazon account and try that before the Alexa App on your phone. YOU WILL HAVE TO CONNECT YOUR WIFI ON YOUR COMPUTER TO Amazon Alexa Wifi. This is not permanent it's just to get your Alexa to connect on it's own. Kinda dumb and confusing. Don't expect Alexa to play Amazon music as it wont connect if it's not a paid service from what I gather. I have a free Pandora account which one can connect from the app then Alexa will let one play music from there once you give it permission to access your account. Plan on at least an hour to get the gist on how all this is done and once you get it working you'll feel pretty good about it and you'll be saying oh that so cool! That's cool too and so on. I'm about 30 feet away from mine in a bedroom and Alexa in the kitchen and she can hear my commands. The sound is pretty decent for such a small size hockey puck. You can get some free stuff such as woof woof for your dog and have a few giggle. (through the app.) Please don't contact me on how to connect it.

SETUP: The setup was fairly easy overall. Upon loading the app you go to: devices - add button - add device - echo - select what kind of echo - choose generation - select device - connect to wifi - connect to bluetooth device (Optional) - you're done. So while it seems like a lot the app guides you every step of the way and only takes a few minutes. USING ALEXA: Nothing major software wise as these are pushes out to devices regularly. The only thing I noticed was voice recognition. It was a little better than my echo dot 2nd generation. Usually if I was in another room with my second generation I had to yell. With my 3rd generation I don't have to talk as loud. AUDIO QUALITY: The audio quality on the dot 3 was better than the dot 2 by far. Now there is still room for improvement but it did get better. Even right off the bat at setup I could tell that the quality was better. It sounds fuller and better base. DESIGN: As you can tell by the pictures the dot 3 has a new finish. Instead of plastic the dot 3 has fabric in various colors. There is also more color choices than the 2nd generation. I think that new version blends in better with the room. It also looks less hockey puck like. The buttons instead of being on the outer rim are now centered more towards the center. The 4 microphones are just beyond the buttons. PLUG: The plug for the newer version fits into the wall better than the second version. (See Picture) I didn't like this when Amazon introduced the second version but it's here now. PRICE: The new echo dot is at the same starting price of $50. The echo dot 2 has been discounted to $40 as of 11/18/18. So now the big question is it worth the price? Should I upgrade? Well in my opinion if you have the second generation you should not upgrade and instead invest in a bluetooth speaker. There is not much difference besides the design and audio quality between dot 2 and 3. The software is the same for both. If you really want better audio quality you should buy a bluetooth speaker and connect it to your echo dot. It's really not worth the $50 just for better audio quality and some nice fabric. However if you are looking to have multiple echo devices in your home then your probably better off getting the newer version. Overall: Both the echo dot 2 and 3 have their ups and downs. Really if you have another echo dot you don't need to upgrade. However if this is your first echo device or you want multiple echo devices in your home, consider the newer version. Well hope that helps!

This is a very good smart speaker. It has way better sound than the previous version!

Update: also bought a Dot 3 with Clock. It’s all the things the regular Dot 3 is, with a digital clock. I was hoping it would be nice for a bedside clock, but not so much. It has a very responsive auto dimming feature- that’s the good. But the level to which it dims is STILL too bright for my bedside. I won’t change the starts for my original review since Amazon thinks this is the same product. But I will say that as a bedside clock, the display only gets 2 STARS ⭐️ ⭐️. There is an opportunity for salvation though. This Dot has a touch response for dismissing alarms. I would like to be able to turn off the display in the app, and then show the clock momentarily with a tap. Make that happen, Amazon, and we’ll be good. ——————————————————————— Original review: Dot 3 is a remarkable update to this device. I didn’t expect much, but the sound on this is markedly better than previous incarnations. That said, temper your expectations. This is a small speaker. All things considered, this small puck delivers a well rounded and rich sound. It’s much warmer, considerably louder, and landslides less “tinny”. There will be audiophiles who will put this down, and they should since this is not intended to be the worlds best speaker. But, if you deploy a house-full of these things, you will have a robust all-over speaker system that can do all sorts of things. Now I’m forced to consider the fate of my Gen2 Dots. Side note: the amount of people complaining about this thing is astonishing. I believe most are the type who would complain if their ice water was cold. I have a rather large Echo ecosystem in my home. In the first 30 minutes of setup, I knew this was an upgrade from Dot2. It’s a no brainer. Short of an actual defective product (it happens), I can’t understand where the problem is. Setup was fine- came mostly configured right out of the box. Sound quality is excellent FOR A 1.6” SPEAKER. If you want home automation control, with compatible devices that do not require a hub, this will take you there. If you want stadium rocking sound, you’re an idiot for thinking this was even close. If you want whole home audio at a reasonable adult level, 6 of these would be amazing. All of the connection issues are most likely shitty home networks, and dots on different bands in said shitty networks. Yes, some networks will ‘talk’ across 2.4 ang 5GHz bands - but not all. Depends solely on your equipment/router and settings there in. Some routers, like Spectrum’s Ubee, will not maintain an address lease for long connected devices like these. So it would appear that these need to be frequently restarted to maintain functionality when in fact it is the fault of the router. A nice, cheap TP-Link router (available here, of course) can fix all of that. Disclaimer: I work in technology. I’m a manager of network administration. I understand these limitations and my expectations are appropriately calibrated. Honesty, theses are basically fancy tuna cans. What did you think it was gonna sound like? Still the best sounding tuna can I own!

I went ahead and snatched this up while it was still on sale and I'm glad I did! I love my Alexa. I don't know if the rating for the voice recognition is supposed to be 5 stars if it recognizes your voice specifically or if it recognizes voices in general because mine will listen to any voice🤷🏿♀️. It's not as loud as I thought it would be but it's still has great sound quality with nice base. I also had trouble trying to connect my phone because I did not want it to have Wi-Fi I just wanted to use it as a Bluetooth and that was a problem I had to wait until I was at my sister's house to connect it because she has wi-fi and I don't I didn't like that. I feel like I should have been able to connect Bluetooth a lot easier without using Wi-Fi and all that extra jazz but over all it's a good great speaker and I love it.
