As background, I consider myself to be a serious amateur. I have dabbled in photography for nearly 40 years. Never shot professionally though I have done a couple of weddings as a courtesy to friends when I was much younger and thought I could do anything and didn't think about the consequences if I failed! ! I have done a fair share of portraiture which is what a rig like this is primarily intended though it could also be used for still life / product shots. It is from that perspective that I am writing. Given the price of this lighting system, I had modest expectations. After setting it up and doing a quick "shoot", I will say that it is better than expected and delivers excellent value for the cost (purchased mine during a "Lightning Deal" for $63). Overall, it has been well thought out and with nice small touches. For example: (a) the transparent covers for the soft boxes are "fitted" and have Velcro strips at strategic locations to keep them in place; (b) the included weight bag that screws into end of the boom to help balance it; (b) the rocker switches at the right location on the soft boxes though wish the cords were slightly longer (easy workaround with extension cords and a power strip); etc. Saying that, I question the actual usability of the product, meaning does it really get the job done easily? In this case, I'm not convinced as I don't believe the light output is sufficient for portraiture. Yes, it does provide even and soft flattering light but you will still need to shoot at a relative wide aperture and high ISO. Using all three light boxes only 6 - 8 feet from my subject, I had set the lens at f4 (Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR Gen I) and my camera was auto selecting shutter speeds 1/100-1/125 with an ISO ranging from 400 - 720. And that was in a reasonably well lighted room (many windows). Not sure how it will perform in a darkened studio environment. On the other hand, if you are really serious about getting best quality then you are likely mounting the camera on a tripod and using a remote shutter release...slower shutter speeds that come with lower (optimal) ISO are then manageable. Regarding build quality, I wasn't expecting professional gear and I was not disappointed. This is not the kind of gear that a professional would use where you are setting up and breaking it down on a regular basis. Also, probably not suitable for using out outside...too light and susceptible to tipping in wind. But then again, you are not spending several hundred dollars either. However, if you take your time and treat it with care, it should provide good service. Furthermore, you can fold it up and store it in the included carrying bag. I see this gear being useful at informal family get togethers when you want to get nice photos of 2 or maybe 3 people. If you are shooting larger groups or need to shoot faster, then believe you will be better served with multiple (and more powerful) flash / strobe units with umbrellas. It is a little on the large side but should be more than adequate for still life / product shots. Bottom line, definitely worth the $$ if you know how to use it but strictly amateur gear though.

Came packed in a logical, well designed fashion, which protected each of the elements of this setup. Easy to put together, and set up. MountDog, the seller, was excellent to deal with, addressed an issue with an eye towards customer satisfaction. Highly recommend this 3 light set for anyone wanting to nicely light for photography or videography. Update: raised rating to 5 stars. Lighting set operates exactly as expected. Cost/value ratio is outstanding. MountDog exhibits high commitment to customer satisfaction. Have already recommended these to other freelance videographers.

I am a photographer and the light plays a huge role for me, so I chose something suitable for a very long time, I looked at a huge number of different products at different prices and decided to choose this one and I can tell you that I am very glad that I chose this particular product. Excellent quality, everything is done very well, I would like to talk separately about the brightness, the light is incredibly bright and it is very cool, especially for such a small price. I advise

This is the second set of continuous lights that I buy to work, I love this one because it comes with a special third light that you can put above objects to do overhead shots. Great for food photography or photos of small objects. Lights are very bright, they are not kino flo or hmi lights but they do a very good job. Lights are cold tempeture. Tripods are ok, they are small, not heavy and are made of a plastic and light metal. Recently I do some photos for local brand. of jeans with this lights in the night, I put some color gels over the lights and magic happened, I share you some pics. Either you are a beginner or a pro lights are always handy and helpful in this job.

This set is incredible. It may not be industry grade, but it is exceptional. The lights are bright enough to work really well. All the piece came with the item. Yes you can use both soft boxes and umbrella lights at the same time (nothing is missing). The bag(s) that came with it are good enough. I've used them repeatedly as I tear down the set after every use and put them back in the back. All in all, you get what you pay for. great quality ensemble that would costs you in the thousands if you went professional with each item. For the low cost, it is quite durable. As long as you are patient you can assemble, the package easily and if you are meticulous and careful this package can and will last for a while.

These things are really great for the ~$70 they cost. I received 2 straight stands, 1 boom stand, 3 of the soft boxes, and 4 bulbs plus a bag to hold them all. Setup was easy and though the stands are very light weight and flimsy, they hold these soft boxes just fine. The straight stands don't really need any extra sand bags to hold them in place, but the boom stand should have one on the base. The boom itself is flimsy like the rest and even looks to bow a bit, but again for the price I wasn't expecting super heavy duty stands. It gets the job done and has the bags to put in a counter weight on the boom arm (no weight included, but get some sand from the local hardware store and put it in zip lock bags first before putting those bags into the nylon counter weight bags). My only real compliant is that the on/off switch for the soft boxes are up near the connection to the light by the soft box. So if you put these up high, you will have a hard time using them to turn these on and off. But you could just put them on a power strip and use that on/off to turn them all on and off at the same time (which is what I did). So doing that for a master switch is so convenient, I won't deduct a star for the individual power switches. Bulbs work great and all came in boxes with form fitting styrofoam around them so didn't fell like they were in danger of breaking or anything. The color is nice though my personal preference is to use a LED light with adjustable color range to introduce a little yellow light into the scene... but that's just me. The light boxes themselves were fairly easy to set up. The 'box' is sort of like a 4 arm umbrella and opens up as you maneuver a ring around where the light bulb will be screwed in (don't put the bulb in first). Once you get the hang of it on the first one, the other 2 are easy to set up. Diffuser fabric is just attached with velcro and can be left off if you like as well. Now I have them set up and never take them down, so not sure how they would hold up with constant putting up and taking down for a traveling rig. As I said they are rather flimsy, but for throwing nice light and really low price, I'm really happy with the purchase.

Decided on this studio lighting set, after looking at and researching quite a few on Amazon, and I am super pleased with my decision. I bought this as a budget, introductory lighting set for a youtube channel. With that in mind, let's start with some general information. The tripods are more than adequate - not cheap and chintzy but also not super high end professional. All the adjusting knobs do exactly what you need them to and they keep the tripods in place. The boom tripod can be a bit tricky setting up (flops around and is unstable without the sand bags - I put rocks in mine so I could start using it right away as I didn't have sand on hand - but who does?) but that has nothing to do with the quality, but rather just the what the actual boom is and what it is supposed to do. The actual softbox is of great quality - material is thick and the inside is reflective. The bulbs are bright, have a high CRI, and comes with an extra / replacement - it doesn't get any better. As a side note, I have sat under these lights for a few hours at a time and I do not get warm/hot (my studio room is approximately 8x12). Setting up is incredibly easy and fast. I am going to say in under 15 minutes (first time set up), you will be ready to go. At time of purchase, this set was $86 and in all honesty, this price for this quality cannot be beat. If you are looking and wondering between other sets, I would suggest this one. Aside from the qualities listed above, the two main added features that put it above and over the top for me were the addition of the extra bulb (these are pricey) and the CRI (I believe it was 92, but might be 94 - can't remember). I contacted other manufacturers and they replied that the CRI of their bulbs ranged from 72-84. Excellent value!

In this price range, you know what you are buying. These are not intended to be a professional light that you schlep all over the countryside slamming around in the trunk of the car. They are very lightweight in all aspects. If you are expecting a thousand dollar quality light kit, you need to spend about a thousand bucks for that. So, why on earth would I give it 5 stars? Because it was exactly what I needed. I do green screen video conferencing in my home office. And I was having all kinds of lighting problems with doing it. I was getting shadows on the screen, and I just couldn't get it to be smooth. So I ended up buying this kit. It was pretty low priced, and my big advantage was that I never need to move it once I set it up. It setup pretty easy. The stands are definitely light weight. And the fittings are plastic for the most part. However, they did exactly what I wanted. Of course, I replaced all the bulbs. I quickly tried it with one of the bulbs that came with it, and they were WAY too bright for my small office. If I had been doing photography, I'd have loved them. However, for my green screen, they were too bright (and too close to me) to look at for 8 hours a day. So overall I'm very happy with them. I now have much smoother light to work with. Exactly what I was looking for.

I got these because i'm poor. They got me down to iso 200 1/60 and f/4 in a pitch black room. They are cheap cheap cheap lights so don't expect much but if you are very careful with them they will be good. The softboxes are great, I had ordered a 50 dollar lightin kit from limo studio with the umbrellas for 50 bucks and they didn't do anything. I was at iso 640 at best with those, in a lit room! the 35 dollars is a bit more considering it like 65% more to jump from 50 to 85 but it was worth it for the image quality. Don't buy these expecting something professional and easy to use. The lights will fall down if you're not careful! Move slowly and maybe get some sandbags. IMO These are the best cheap lights you can get if you're on a budget. The next level lights are 200 dollars. They might have better stands and be brighter but they cost twice as much.

If you are an amateur photographer this is the perfect startup kit. It gives you the essentials and it's of AMAZING quality for the price. This is probably the best deal you will get. Very easy to pack. Very light. Also, they provide an extra bulb and an extra extension tube. PLUS, they will include a bag to transport all that stuff in one compact way. I just love how easy it is to setup and uninstall.
