A Useful Product For Playing DVDs on a Computer Without an Optical Drive

I bought this device to try using an external DVD drive on a laptop, since so many new laptops don't seem to come with an optical drive anymore. I use an optical drive frequently, and not having one is not an option, so this was a research project.The drive arrived promptly, and everything necessary was included. I plugged the drive into a vacant USB port (version 2.0, I think, in any event not 3.0) with its data cable; this cable is about 20"; long, which keeps the drive pretty near to the laptop (fine for me). I run ubuntu linux, and the drive was recognized immediately; no drivers had to be found. There is an extra cable for connecting the power port on the external DVD drive to a second USB port, in case the first did not deliver enough power to the drive, but I did not need it, as the data cable delivered enough power. My laptop is a Sony about 8 years old, fyi.The drive did not show in my file manager until I put a disk into it, at which time it was listed by the name of the disk. All the disks I tried were recognized and played well, with the exception of minor stuttering one time on one disk. I would not expect any issues playing a disk with this drive, it works well.

Easy, Quiet, and Works Well

This is very easy to use and works well. I just plugged it up, Windows recognized it, put a DVD in, and I was ready to watch Die Hard. It runs quietly and quickly. This goes great with my mini PC and adds the ability to use discs. I’m very pleased.

Absolute Plug & Play, Immediately

Seriously so easy to set up, just opened the box and it was an easily accessible usb cord. My laptop is a touch screen Sony Vaio and didn't come with a cd/DVD drive so this is convenient for me.

External DVD CD burner drive

Nice packaging and it’s quiet when using. For me. I had many DVDs that I was not able to use since I purchased my MacBook Air. I needed something to read these discs on external hard drives. This product Solved all my problems! Highly recommend.

Good Data-only DVD and CD player due to Windows 8.1 issue

Yes, this only plays data DVDs if you have newer Windows 8.1 software. It's not this player's fault if movies don't play for you. Windows still allows us to play CDs and data-only DVDs but the new releases have discontinued the internal DVD movie player software. There are free downloads online that may possibly work for you. But this player works as described and if you have older version of Windows 8 then it will also play movies for you.
