Awesome Pants ... Perfect for Backpackers and Campers
I'm a big guy and intentionally bought a size I thought would accommodate my needs, but these are a little snug. Not enough to go up another size and deal with bagginess, but just a little snug. I have already lost 5 pounds on my way to lose another 15 (training for a section hike this Fall), so they should fit perfect before too long (may even be a little baggy). These pants are great. The Silver Ridge line is great. I have a shirt too. I don't backpack without these. They are lightweight and pack down smaller than most t-shirts. The zip-off legs are an unbeatable feature. I am really impressed with this product. Love them. Would buy another pair, but they are so tough I don't need to (I don't pack a lot of extra clothes when backpacking). However, when this pair does wear out, I know exactly what I'll replace them with ... another of the same. Now ... if only I could get them in my size to match the color of my official BSA zip-offs (I hate the BSA pants).

Great pair of pants for hot weather and walking
Spent two weeks walking around China with my 9 year old son. These guided tours included hundreds of flights of Fitbit-measured stairs, and many many miles of walking. These were my favorite pants on the entire trip. They are also the first pair of convertible pants I've owned. I will be buying more pairs of these. Some great features... o Fit about as I expected, or maybe just a little to the small side of 38". (...though I am smaller now from all that walking!) o The shorts were very comfortable and dried quickly when damp. o Felled seams cover the zipper on both sides, so no chafing or rubbing your skin the wrong way. Doesn't catch on stuff while brushing past. o Full-length pants or shorts felt much cooler than my customary jeans and cargo shorts. o Washed out in the sink each night, they dried quickly by morning when spread over a hanger, so the odd spill needn't relegate them to the dirty clothes bag! o Cargo pocket has velcro on one side and zipper on the other - I had to concerns about my wallet's safety in the zippered side. I will be buying two more pair when colors I want are available!

Recommended. Great for hiking.
I own 2 pairs of these so far and will probably order another. I really love these pants for my hiking and camping trips. I wear them all the time, and they are comfortable and well made. the convertible bottoms zip on and off pretty easy, and I like the length of shorts when zipped off. They dry fast, and keep me more comfortable in warm weather. I have not had any issues with seams tearing even during very active wear. The only drawback I have found so far is that the lining of the back pocket seems to tear at the bottom if you keep a wallet in that pocket. It has happened on both the pairs I own, but now I just opt to store my wallet in one of the side cargo pockets. Overall I highly recommend these for anyone looking to be active outdoors and stay comfortable while doing so. They look pretty nice too! Update: I am now planning on ordering my 3rd pair of these pants to use as hiking pants, finally having more than one color will be nice! I am still very happy with these pants, and they have held up very well in the time I have owned them, going with on many hiking trips. Another thing I love about these is the weight. For how durable they are, they are remarkably lightweight and work great for a spar set of pants in a backpack. I will be ordering 1 size up from my usual waist measurement though as I did last time, they seem to run a bit tight in that area.

Great all year pants
These pants are very lightweight, but durable. They wear so comfortably well. They material is light and stretchy. I like where the bottoms zip off. Usually zip off pants have the zippers below the knee, which when the bottoms are zipped off, means you're almost wearing capris. Not a good look for a dude. These pants zip off just above the knee. They are perfect for autumn and spring backpacking trips, and I believe they would be great the other months of the year also. I'll be wearing them even in the summer since they are so light and will give me mosquito protection in the summer without being too hot. Update: I had originally ordered 34x34 because that is my pant size. I have to return those and get the 36x34. The 34x34 pants seemed to fit well, but they were just a little snug which caused the crotch area to be too tight whenever I squatted. I would advise getting one waist higher. These are still awesome pants, though. Update 2: I wore these on a four hour hike today and they were very comfortable. I took the pant legs off before I hit the trail. The pants were very flexible and breathed well. The only slight issue I had with them was the right cargo pocket. It has a small piece of Velcro on it and by the end of the day it didn't seem to want to stick after my sweat got it wet. Minor issue in my mind, though. The left cargo pocket has a zipper on it. Not sure why the right doesn't also. One other thing I like about these pants. The lower pant legs have an L and an R stamped on them so you don't have to guess about which one is which.

Excellent, Durable Convertible Pants
These are very durable pants that can be easily converted into shorts. For me, the size that I chose based on provided measurement fitted as expected. One thing that I noticed that even with very strong wind, the pants hold warmth reasonably well, even though the material they are made of is quiet thin. These pants also have many pockets with and without zippers all over them, which is very handy for someone who carries many items around. The material of the pants I would say is very durable and holds well against stains (or at least they are gone after washing). As for cons, I cannot think of any. Maybe I wish that the material was a bit thicker to trap more warmth during cold days. These are truly excellent convertible pants that I would highly recommend.

3 year review from the desert of Qatar to the mountains of Appalachia
The pants have a relaxed waist, stretchable. I've hiked with them on 40 degree scouting trips through the Appalachia's and also in 120 degree heat in the desert in Qatar. They are made of polyester, which naturally absorbs zero moisture vs cotton which absorbs 27 times its weight in water. That means they will dry very quickly. A couple hours out on a line will dry them effectively, or being worn after a rainstorm. Because they don't absorb much moisture, they are surprisingly warm, and they do a decent job of blocking the wind. That wind resistance is what makes them OK to hike in fall/spring weather when the temperatures are in the upper 40s, lower 50s. You'll want a thicker material if hiking in anything colder than that. In extreme heat, they do wick the moisture away. In Qatar I found that after travelling 200 ft from an air conditioned bunker across the desert (and it's a wet moisture due to the Persian Gulf), you were completely drenched in sweat. That heat is just a few degrees away from being the maximum that people can endure due to the moisture in the air. The paints would dry quickly once inside again, and protect you from the sun. They are a very light cloth that doesn't feel uncomfortable in extreme heat. I would say the durability is pretty good, I've had one of the forward pocket in one of my paints fail due to the stitching, and some of the material is now starting to look thread bear. For those doing things on the water, I've found these shorts travelling in a rigid inflatable boat in salt water will again dry pretty quickly after being dosed by a bow wave, cotton underwear will be your down fall! Salt absorbs water, and in and of itself can quickly lead to rashes, this fabric absorbs no saltwater per say, so will dry especially if you splash down with a bit of fresh water shortly after you've landed. In sum, they are very effective pants to wear while boating. They pack very light, and do not show wrinkles. You can pack them down in a backpack and they weight almost nothing and take up very little room. The bottoms are compact enough you can remove them and put them in the front pockets. The belt isn't very fancy, but I haven't had any fail, and I've found they are the ideal size for emergency tourniquets (tie it, don't use the buckle), which I've had to do. It's probably not everyone's list of reasons to buy a belt, but unlike leather and dress belts, this can be used to synch something down. I've also used it to synch down loads backpacking when I couldn't find anything else and SUV roof racks. The color works well, and unlike everything else I have, has never born out a stain. Again, that's a nice feature of polyester, the dye is permanent, everything else washes away like engine grease, blood, mustard, dirt. When wet they don't look obviously wet with the color unlike the lighter versions. They don't fade, or pile, but will eventually start to wear, like everything else. In appearance, they aren't formal wear, but from casual dining in Doha to Annapolis, they fit the bill. Of course, they don't look out of place on a military base or a camping trip. They aren't so GI that they scream "search me for hidden weapons and cans of chewing tobacco". Overall I say they deserve around 4.5 stars, with the sole objection being a bit better stitching for the pants pockets, though I have carried probably fairly heavy things in them, so they were under a bit of load. Since I can't choose 4.5 stars, I choose 5.

Great option for travels.
Originally purchased this convertible pant for hiking and outdoor activities but took them on a recent trip overseas and they were perfect for traveling. The weather was cold so I never had to convert them to shorts and had to use a base-layer under these pants since they are thin but I was very impressed as they were very comfortable, ultra light weight (great to keep weight to a minimum), and the pockets were perfect....zipper pocket for my phone, velcro pocket for my wallet, and normal pocket for a train card. I actually used this pant over the jeans I brought as they were more functional and comfortable and I could wash them and they dried fairly quickly. I am so impressed with these for traveling that I ordered a different color and the non-convertible version to try out on another trip....definitely leaving the jeans at home this time to save on weight.

Very lightweight, runs small
I got these for my husband for our trips to Florida. He has an older pair of Columbia convertible pants he absolutely loves so we tried these. Very lightweight. Dries fast if they get wet. Sizing was a little tricky. He wears 34/32 jeans. Based on reviews, he tried both the 34/32 and the 36/32. The 34's were very snug in the waist. It says there is elastic in the waist, but there really isn't. It doesn't give much. The legs fit very 'slim'. They didn't look bad but we were worried that in the heat of Florida having them fit that snug would become uncomfortable. The 36 fit more like a relaxed pant. The waist was a little too big but it comes with a belt. Decided it would be more comfortable to have a looser fit in the heat and use the belt to snug up around the waist. Now that we've got the sizing down, we'll be ordering more pairs.

An EXACT Fit & Cut!!
True to my size, in Classic Fit cut (my first Columbia hiking pant; perfect for my upcoming trip atop Mt. Pilatus in Luzern, Switzerland; France & Italy travels). Am not sure why some have complained about the thigh/seams are narrow (mesomorph body type; not necessarily have thin thighs) or the bottom hems are too long (exact length to my typical skinny jeans size and length). Coincidentally, one of my favorite colors in grayish tone (Grill) was available on sale, and in my exact size. At a recently lowest price ever, of $15/pair (according to Camel3x) in 30X30..I wised up, and ordered two pairs instead (one as spare/back-up). At $30 for two hiking pants (price was way lower than my nearest Columbia Outlets' going rates), you can't beat an outstanding value for well-made, highly rated hiking pants..and Columbia Silver Ridge Convertibles, at that.

They are great. They are very light
I'm a bike commuter and have been wearing these pants on-and-off for eight months, now. They are great. They are very light, so they are perfect for those days when it's just a little too cool in the morning but will be too hot by late afternoon: just zip-off the lower pant legs and you're wearing comfortable shorts for the ride home. They also look good enough for a casual business-casual. Many days I can skip having to change into work pants. But I'm writing this morning because I just wiped mud off of my black pair. It rained heavily last night, and there were mud puddles all along my route. Try as I might, I still got to work with spots of mud up-and-down the legs of my pants. "Just great," I thought, "I'm going to have to change and then wash these when I get home." But I wiped them gently with a damp paper towel, and they came completely clean! I can't believe it. I didn't even use any soap and really almost no water -- just a damp paper towel. Thank you, Columbia, for a great pair of pants.
