Great replacement for the eyepiece - affordable, lot of bang for the buck. I'm using this with a Celestron Nexstar 6SE If you're reading this review and trying to decide on this eyepiece then, you're probably, like me, a bit of a newbie in learning about this, so here's what my experience was like with this. The telescope tube (optical tube assembly, or OTA) collects light from the sky and creates an image that you can explore with the eyepiece. The magnification of what you're seeing in the sky is easy to calculate by taking OTA length / eyepiece length. My 6SE (1500mm focal length) came with a standard 25mm eyepiece, so 1500/25mm = 60x magnification. This zoom eyepiece starts at 24mm, which is nearly identical magnification (62x) and zooms to 8mm, or 187x (3x greater magnification). But you're just doing an optical enlargement of a section of the image that was created by the OTA, so the image you'll then observe *is* larger, but it will also appear a lot darker, you'll start to quickly realize that you don't have suitable optics to easily focus and get a nice crisp image, and I find I start to notice the slight vibration that I introduce to the telescope when my head touches the eyepiece. I sometimes use this zoom eyepiece with the similarly priced Celestron Barlow extender and I like that combination and am able to explore more, but it's just thinking through what this can and can't do. I've included two pictures simply taken with my phone peeping through the eyepiece looking at Jupiter at 24mm (zoomed out) and 8mm (zoomed in) to give a sense of the magnification. This doesn't give any sense of the image quality or crispness.

Views are good with an 8" SCT, an 80mm refractor and a 14" Dobsonian. There is a slight vignetting as you rotate the eyepiece, but that is expected in these style of ZOOM optics. The rings of Saturn and the moon showed very good views in the 8"SCT and the 80mm. In the 14" I was able to separate double stars in Cassiopeia and get a good view of the Ring Nebula. Attaching a phone adapter was a bit of a pain due to the size of the barrel, and that you need to twist the barrel to change magnifications. Very minor point to bring up for those using cell phones to take pictures. For the price, this is a worthy consideration for a new telescope looking for something more than the included eyepieces.

I have several fixed focal length eyepieces and some of them were actually quite a bit more expensive than this one but my variable celestron has become my new favorite eyepiece. It is just so convenient to be able to dial in or out on the fly when stargazing. The pluses just outweight any slight loss of clarity in this eyepiece so I use it all the time now. I have a nexstar 8 and this is a great match. Use it for everything from close in objects like the moon or bird watching to planet viewing, etc. If you can accept a slightly less sharp image, this is a great choice and the convenience of a simple twist to zoom in or out can not be overstated. It is literally a game changer. I like it so much, I am tempted to invest in a higher dollar version just to see what they can do. For the money, this is a no brainer... just buy one and you can thank me later!

I have a 4-year-old son who absolutely LOVES all things space. While he has an over-abundance of adorable curiosity, he has the patience of, well, a 4-year-old. So, changing out eyepieces is a big no-no. By the time I found the object I was searching for in my 25 mm, properly focused, swapped my 25 mm for a 10 mm, and performed any necessary adjustments, my son would be a good hundred yards away playing with something else. Once I would get him back and excited to see what I found, let’s just say it can be difficult to get a 4-year-old to look through an eyepiece without touching/moving the scope. There was too much heartbreaking disappointment and overall frustration while I was trying to harness my son’s curiosity while he played with what is no doubt a “big boy toy.” This zoom eyepiece has been a problem-solver of epic proportions. Not only am I enjoying it myself, but the combination of quality and convenience while also being able to keep my son engaged has been absolutely priceless. It truly is the best of all worlds for the enjoyment of adults and children alike. The quality is shockingly excellent (I purchased in a bundle with a 2x Barlow, which made a HUGE difference), and the ease of use without having to change out eyepieces is priceless. My son’s adorable ooohhhs and ahhhhs when he was able to see the phase of Venus and its proximity to the Pleiades (you’d be shocked what this kid knows already!) followed by the Orion Nebula were worth 10x the price I paid, easy. My only “criticism” is the sheer size and weight of the eye piece. Make sure you secure it well, and I would not be shocked if this eyepiece had enough weight to slowly pull down on a telescope either of lesser quality or that has been “used” a lot. Gravity and such. All-around, I got EXACTLY what I paid for, and this has thus far exceeded all of my expectations.

I love this eyepiece. One thing not noted, or shown in the pictures is that there are markings on the side to show the strength. I am providing my own photos to show this. I noticed some of the other zoom lenses had it, but couldn't find info on this one, but I took the chance anyway. So yes, there are markings on the side for 8mm, 12mm, 18mm, and 24mm.

I like this eyepiece a lot. I've used it alone and with a 3x barlow. I've also just recently used it with a Nikon adapter ring to attach my Nikon D5600 DSLR. The nice thing about this eyepiece (that I didn't know before) was that the eye relief rubber ring unscrews allowing you to screw the eyepiece directly to the camera adapter ring. The zoom feature is great when you have a camera attached because you can recompose a shot without changing eyepieces. The only issue I have is that the zoom movement is very stiff and hard to adjust. It's not a big enough problem to lose a star though. Attached is a pic I took my first night with the camera attached.

Great experience from delivery to using. Definitely under priced. It was delivered in a day, and I will using Celestron - Zoom Eyepiece for Telescope - Versatile 8mm-24mm Zoom the next evening. It did not disappoint. After set of my telescope, and the 15 seconds of inserting the Celestron zoom lens, I was looking at Jupiter, and Saturn. Images were very good. Others mentioned difficulty of moving the lease, I had none. It was smooth, and I didn't have to find the planets again after using the different zoom settings. I am very impressed with my Celestron. I am a beginner astronomer, and I was thinking of buying the Orion zoom lens, which is an execellent lens. But for now, I am very happy with the Celestron, and plan on using it for awhile. Happy customer.

First off i havent used this ep yet but from what everyone tells me its AWESOME. one thing i want to point out is the fact that this ep has threads which i believe are 42mm. I have been searching and searching and searching and digging for info on the thread size to adapt my canon vixia r800. I cannot believe how many dumb answers i get here when i ask a question about a product for example i asked "what is the thread size of this ep?" the answer i got was "1.25" --.-- If you dont know the answer dont try to be a super hero and misinform people. Anyway i will update this review once i test it out. It seems superb in quality. A bit heavy but thats ok. I would definately recommend this to anyone that wants to do ep projection eith a DSLR or a digital camcorder that has a lens threading. Update: this thing is awesome with a celestron 127 mak and 3x Barlow on Jupiter and Saturn. Although twisting the barrel can be tight it does the job. Love it.

This is a great eyepiece. Very surprised on the clarity and sharpness on a zoom lens. I have found it works very well at all magnification levels and only begins to show less light transmission around the 10-8mm settings. Although, it is still good. I find the clarity to be as good if not better then high end Plossl EP's. Settings of 24mm to 12mm are so good, I find the clarity and sharpness very close or the same as the Celestron X-Cel lx EP's, Explore Scientific 52 series and even some Televue EP's in the same magnifications. I would highly recommend this eyepiece.

Seems like I received a used eyepiece. Punctured case, scratches, loose optics, and some kind of black gunk on the threading for attaching things like a filter. I tried to screw on a filter and had to stop when I noticed resistance on the first spin. I wanted to use this and waited until today to receive, but very disappointed that I received a used eyepiece and expected a new one. Will update once I receive replacement. *UPDATE. Received my replacement. I can now say that I've tried out the eyepiece. This was a great investment. I previously bought 3 different eyepieces from another company cause they were cheaper than name brands, but with this celestron zoom eyepiece, my star gazing nights will be better since I wouldn't have to switch out eyepieces to view different objects. This eyepiece is a lot better in regards to clarity compared to the 3 eyepieces (6mm, 8mm, 12mm) that I previously purchased.
