This product is made from 100% real Bamboo. Even though I read through the negative reviews from people who have no idea what they are talking about I decided to buy one. Bamboo grows as a hollow round tube. It is sliced into slats that are approximately 1/8" wide and can be as long as the Bamboo stalk is (generally about 12"). Once you have a stack of these slats they are then glued together to make boards, planks or in this case a block. Bamboo can be glued together either vertically or horizontally each of these two techniques will give the end product a completely different look. (Vertical grained glue ups have very little grain and present a very linear appearance, meanwhile Horizontal glue ups show much more grain and that little Bamboo detail (little ziggly lines) that we all recognize as bamboo). This particular product is made by gluing the Bamboo vertically. You can clearly see this in the product as it appears to be made up of tiny strips. Some people are mistakenly stating that the product is made from veneer. This is false as veneer is paper thin sheets of wood. Hardwood trees can be cut into boards or planks as they are solid inside. The cutting mill simply decides what cuts are the most efficient (get the most linear feet out of that particular tree) and then a trunk is milled or re-sawed to make the boards. This of course can n ot be done with Bamboo as it is once again hollow in the middle. So let's look at the actual product. Size 9" at the tallest point 10" long (across the bottom) 4 7/8" wide Slots 3.5" at the top of unit 2x 2" wide on left 2x 1 1/2" on the right 1 1/2" on left 1 1/4" on the right 2x 1" towards the bottom 1 1/4" by 1/2" slot for scissors 8x steak knife slots are approx. 7/8" wide All slots go all the way through the block and are open at the bottom. Workmanship Very good overall, I did notice that a few slots have some rough spots where the slot was machined but they did not take the time to sand it down properly. Not a big deal does not effect its ability to hold knives. Overall I am giving the product 5 stars. The main reason is value. A solid wood block that is well built and costs under $20! Yes better blocks are available but cost much more. As a side note to those people who complain that their knives don't fit, that's not the blocks fault, it's theirs for not measuring before buying. This for me was a very good purchase at a ridiculously great deal. (Under $20 with Prime shipping).

There seems to be a question of this block's constuction: is it solid bamboo or is it a veneer? The answer is "both." Bamboo, a hollow, cylindrical plant with long, longitudinal fibers, does not grow with a 6" x 6" cross section, such as would be necessary to build this block. Instead, pieces of bamboo are glued and pressed together to make the block. Then, to make a uniform and attractive pattern, the top layer of the block is covered with thick, milled-together pieces of bamboo. Also, I took a couple of pictures of my longest knife and honing steel, which tested the deepest slots in the block. My honing steel is a a Wusthof 10". In the photo, you can see it is contained inside its slot by about 1mm. Any longer, and it would protrude out the back. I also placed a Wusthof Ikon 9" bread knife in the deepest knife slot (except for the cleaver slot), and it fit perfectly there. But, I wouldn't recommend going any longer than 9"; even 1" longer and I think the knife would poke out. All in all, it is a solid, attractive knife block with a lot of deep slots, at a great price.

My old storage block finally bit the dust and this one has come to the rescue. I like it much better than the old one because now I can also store my steak knives in the block. One problem is that my chef's knife and my bread knife stick out of the bottom of the block by about a quarter of an inch. The blades on these knives are 10 1/4" (to the handle where they sit on the block). It's fine for me, due to the way I have my block placed, but could be a problem for others, maybe? Excellent price. I'm happy with my purchase.

I've had a beautiful set of stainless steel knives stuck in a drawer because could not find a block to display them. The knives did not fit in the old block I had and in this block solved the problem. The contrast of the wood color and the stainless steel looks beautiful. Really pleased with this purchase!

Don't have the biggest knife collection but over time pieces accumulate & for me this block allows storage for all. Best part, it's "footprint" is only about 1/4" more than I had before so counter storage is a breeze. I don't have a protractor to measure the angle but for me the withdraw & return of the knives "feels right" for my height/hands. Hardly worth mentioning but out of honesty, the slots next to the shears can be tricky. I was able to put two paring/peeling knives there so no problem but it does make me wonder why block manufacturers don't put the shears (& maybe the cleaver) slots on the side or at least with a vertical orientation.Probably won't need another knife block but will keep this in mind for future gifts.

This knife block is heavy and sturdy. Looks beautiful! Compared to my old KitchenAid knife block (see pic). this is much larger mainly bc it holds more but added height makes it looks more attractive too. Have had it for a few months now and no issues with peeling, cracking or fading. If you have the DalStrong steak knives, they will not fit in the lower steak knife slots. It was my fault for not checking first but there’s enough slots to place them elsewhere. One issue for me is that the scissors do not sit well but slanted and cramped between the other knives. Not a deal breaker; just an aesthetic issue. Overall, happy with my upgraded knife block!

We just replaced our 6 steak knives with a set of 8 with 5 inch blades and needed a new knife block. We researched many others and even purchased one that we thought would work but found, to our disappointment, that the steak knife blades in the bottom row were sticking out the bottom of the block. We replaced it with the Cook N Home Bamboo block and it's so much better!! All our knives fit perfectly including the 8 new steak knives, and it looks great on our quartz countertop!! I would recommend this knife block for anyone with a similar circumstance.

I recently started using a cleaver type knife which is just over 3" wide. This knife block accommodates it perfectly, as well as all my other knives. Bamboo always holds up incredibly and I like that the knife slots are cut out of the bamboo. My old knife block was not cut out and it fell apart. I also like that there are the 8 steak knife slots because I can keep my smaller knives there. Well worth the money. 5 stars!

We moved into a new house recently and threw away the old grease covered knife block we had. We don't have enough drawer space to put knives there, plus jostling around in the drawer tends to dull them. This block was just the ticket for holding large butcher knives, chef's knives, bread knives, steak knives, kitchen shears, and a sharpening steel.

First off, this wasn't very expensive for what it is so I didn't have high expectations. I have a very nice set of Chicago cutlery that I just purchased and didn't want to just stuff everything in a drawer to rarely be used. So I though or buying a knife storage block and bought this one. I'm very pleased with my choice. It is well made and stores ALL of my knives, even had a spot left I could put my special Calphalon knife in as well. I use that knife for just about everything but am always nervous about reaching in the drawer and slicing my hand getting it out. I keep my knives razor sharp so this block is going to be so handy. The knives slide in and out without catching on anything. I think this block is going to be perfect for what I need and looks very nice on my counter in our new kitchen. Unless you want to spend big bucks and purchase a high end block, this one will do the trick. Very happy with it.
